To be annoyed at how someone was wearing a poppy

Aibu I went shopping to the supermarket this morning and one of the staff was wearing a poppy in her hair as a fashion accessory. I think it's great that young people wear poppys to show respect but I found this disrespectful wearing it as a fashion accessory

How do you know that she does not have a good reason for wearing her poppy like this? Loved one in Afghanistan? Maybe.

she bought the poppy to support the RBL. her money is already supporting them whether she wears it in her hair or her chest. what difference does it make? is it disrespectful to buy one and keep it in yoru pocket?

I cant bear the amount of competative poppy wearing that has become the norm.

Only a few years ago it wasnt an issue,you bought one you wore it, you did the two minutes silence and paid your respects.

Now there is all this rightious indignation stirred up in no small part by the media. They like to spread it about that no one cares anymore, specially them immigrants . People have to have the biggest and bestest poppys to prove just how wonderful they are. All those bloody stupid FB statuses daring people not to be 'patriotic'

We are not allowed to just get on with it in our own way anymore.

Ooh this is interesting. Dp and I had a v similar conversation with dd1 yesterday. She wanted to wear a poppy in her hair and we both felt that to do so would be using a symbol as a fashion accessory rather than as a symbol - and thus we felt it was inapproriate for her to do so at school, as she had wanted to. So I sort of think yanbu.

I've seen celebs on TV wearing them on their wrists like a corsage.

I agree with the poster above who said that it's a competative thing to wear a poppy now, esp on TV.

I personally don't wear one cuz a) I always forget to buy one, b) when I do buy one they always fall off.

But in my own heart I remember those who fought and fell (including some of my family members) and I feel that that is sufficient.
