Aibu I went shopping to the supermarket this morning and one of the staff was wearing a poppy in her hair as a fashion accessory. I think it's great that young people wear poppys to show respect but I found this disrespectful wearing it as a fashion accessory

Does it matter where you wear it?

EccentricaGallumbits Wed 10-Nov-10 20:35:05

every single sleb you see on TV this week is wearng one as a fashion accessory.

How do you know that she does not have a good reason for wearing her poppy like this? Loved one in Afghanistan? Maybe.
Would that seem disrespectful?
Lots of young women have boyfriends, family or friends serving abroad.
Who are you to judge?

TheFarSide Wed 10-Nov-10 20:36:31

Know what you mean OP, but I think I'm just pleased that people are wearing them.

how is it disrespectful?

she bought the poppy to support the RBL. her money is already supporting them whether she wears it in her hair or her chest. what difference does it make? is it disrespectful to buy one and keep it in yoru pocket?

usualsuspect Wed 10-Nov-10 20:36:53

She paid for it, she can do what she likes with it ffs

booyhoo Wed 10-Nov-10 20:37:27

oh yes YABU

PinkieMinx Wed 10-Nov-10 20:39:24

I bought 3 - DD's eaten them all - that's disrespect!

Maybe her uniform policy says she can't wear one, so she was being inventive?

I cant bear the amount of competative poppy wearing that has become the norm.

Only a few years ago it wasnt an issue, you bought one you wore it, you did the two minutes silence and paid your respects.

Now there is all this rightious indignation stirred up in no small part by the media. They like to spread it about that no one cares anymore, specially them immigrants hmm. People have to have the biggest and bestest poppys to prove just how wonderful they are. All those bloody stupid FB statuses daring people not to be 'patriotic'

We are not allowed to just get on with it in our own way anymore.

Why is it disrespectful to wear a poppy in your hair?

On whose behalf are you offended?

dearprudence Wed 10-Nov-10 20:51:09

YABU - doesn't matter where you wear it. I pinned DS's poppy onto his sleeve, as he didn't want to wear it on his chest.

yabu. I decline to wear one. Others can chose to. Wherever they like.

LookToWindward Wed 10-Nov-10 20:52:47

She's wearing one - that's good enough for me.

mummynoseynora Wed 10-Nov-10 20:53:58

YABU I am just pleased she's wearing one!

MoralDefective Wed 10-Nov-10 20:55:05

Have you nothing else to be annoyed about?.

celticlassie Wed 10-Nov-10 20:55:33

They don't have pins any more - you have to do something with it!

BelligerentGhoul Wed 10-Nov-10 20:56:51

Ooh this is interesting. Dp and I had a v similar conversation with dd1 yesterday. She wanted to wear a poppy in her hair and we both felt that to do so would be using a symbol as a fashion accessory rather than as a symbol - and thus we felt it was inapproriate for her to do so at school, as she had wanted to. So I sort of think yanbu.

I've seen celebs on TV wearing them on their wrists like a corsage. confused

I agree with the poster above who said that it's a competative thing to wear a poppy now, esp on TV.

I personally don't wear one cuz a) I always forget to buy one, b) when I do buy one they always fall off.

But in my own heart I remember those who fought and fell (including some of my family members) and I feel that that is sufficient.

AuntiePickleBottom Wed 10-Nov-10 21:01:37

so what if she is using a poppy as a fashion accessory, at least she had bought it and that money however little is going to help.

i have a poppy on my car, is that disrespectful.

shinyshoes Wed 10-Nov-10 21:02:23

as long as she's wearing it knowing WHAT and WHY they are then YABU

if she's wearing it as a fashion accessory only because it's pretty and cute then YANBU

on the Xfactor the other night one of them was wearing it on their belt buckle

katiepotatie Wed 10-Nov-10 21:03:43

yabu, I've put one in my hat, I can't see how buying one and wearing is being disrespectful. They don't have pins now either, couldn't get it to stay on my coat confused
