I completely agree with complaint and think Coca Cola, who is quite a despicable company who treats it's staff dreadfully especially in poor countries, should invest as much money and time correcting this wrong as they did starting it. About time this company was exposed.

Chiabom - where do you think it would have been appropriate to stop? At the initial complaint or having got the limited media exposure this has had?

I feel that stopping at the initial complaint would not have been enough to change the behavior of the ad company - it takes losing or risking losing an account to get them to change their behavior and act as a deterrent to others.

PosieParker - Don't all large companies act like this though? On the original thread a poster suggested leveraging this issue to get Coke to make amends for other misdeeds - I just don't see that working, it's to easy to present as hysterical overreaction.

No, there's been effective action. The campaign's been pulled and Coke and their social marketing gurus have learnt that a. it's not acceptable to push extreme hardcore porn at young teenagers and b. there are active consumers as well as passive. Result all round.

I'm not sure consumer boycotts make a huge difference without overwhelming support. Nestle are doing ok after all.

But it's not like it's anything new, they've been at this for a while and it hasn't gone unnoticed, the severity of this incident doesn't even scratch the surface of the actual problem. This is hardly exposure as much as it is a hiccup.

My original post would have been something like:

I'm really failing to see what coca-cola did wrong in that thread.
Ran a competition about embarrassing yourself. The womans daughter decided that scat porn was the way to go about this.
I have no idea how anyone could blame coca-cola for failing to see this as being the obvious logical conclusion of a promotion most likely aimed at frat boys.:

Because I thought it was a competition for people to come up with their own status links and invent the most embarrassing. I didn't realise it was an application which made one up for you which it turns out is the case.
And I'd have to agree with the mother of the other thread, completely inappropriate and fucked up for an application available to a minor.

I'm in to minds as too whether this should be pushed further - there has been a great success already in getting the campaign pulled and an apology, and the agency will have at the least, have had their arse handed to them. If they were to actually lose the account though that would send a more powerful message to the as industry. But pushing this harder risks just giving them more publicity if they are able to present themselves as 'edgy'.

I boycott them to ensure that I am not giving them my money, I don't expect it to make a difference. And, no, I don't think all large companies put their staff's lives at risk. My father works for, and I have in the past, Clarks shoes and they ensure human rights are upheld not only for their own employees but the companies they do business with.

Well, they were selling off tap water with pesticides in it as mineral water in India. And they knew about it and didn't take it off the market till ordered by the courts. So yes, I agree with the word exposed.

Coalition - there's a massive difference between 'edgy' and 'stupid PR fuck-up' though. And I think Coke knows which one applies here. Just as that daft agency that did the ads on the side of buses found out.
