milk alternatives to make porridge

Can't use cow's milk, have tried lactose free, soya milk and all give me terrible wind and bloating. You wouldn't believe the noises my stomach makes it is very embarrassing! Have tried oats milk still results in wind and a little bloating but not so severe. The trouble is I want to lose weight and the weather is turning - I love porridge it's filling, good for cholesterol, yadda yadda yadda. Do you have any suggestions on alternatives or is there something I can drink after having the porridge or take to reduce the symptoms (oh by the way have tried mint tea..it doesn't work) please help me???

water of course.

but i find porridge not good for filling unless eat a bucket of it. protein is better, have a boiled egg.

Have you tried rice milk? It works very well in porridge.

Alternative is just to use water - I think it tastes nearly as nice - then add a bit of honey or a banana on top.

are you sure it's the milk then?
because oat milk is just oats and water....

and porridge is made of oats, so if you can tolerate porridge you ought to be able to tolerate oat milk.
do you see what I mean??

i make it with water for ds2 who can't have dairy and actually it tastes just fine.
but maybe it's porridge in general that your tummy isn't getting on with???

goats milk
rice milk
plain water (add a little honey or jam to taste)

try using some probiotics (good bacteria) from a health shop. capsules not yoghurt (as they are loaded with sugar and don't really contain many/any bacteria!)
Quest, Solgar and Higher Nature are all good quality. They all do cheaper and more expensive versions.

you could try millet and/or rice flakes (to see if you tolerate them better than oats), they will taste a little blander than oats though.

I love porridge, always made it with milk, but use half milk half water now. I hope you find something that works.

If making it with water I usually chop an apple into it, which cooks down, lovely.

Ooh thisisyesterday you have a point there, although I do think I have a problem with milk in generalas reacted the same when I have had other cereals. Perhaps will try oak milk again and make a mental note of what happens.
Thank you paisleyleaf fishie hester and KKCO will give water and rice milk a go too, but does it really taste ok made with water??

I've only ever made porridge with water, works just fine whether made traditionally with oatmeal or porridge oats.

Water, and use OAT BRAN instead of porridge - it's way higher in protein (17% I think).

Don't use salt or sugar, but use honey or maple syrup if it's just too bland. You can chop half a banana into it also and it goes all soft and yummy.

I microwave mine, and it's perfect after two minutes in a HIGH sided container (use enough water to cover half a cup of oat bran).

The oat bran is nuttier, and has more flavour.
The more you stir it the creamier it gets.

If you can tolerate milk fats, try a tiny spoon of cream on top. But obv. don't if you can't!

Try almond milk. iT IS DELICIOUS particularly if you add a banana too. It is also one of the best milk alternative as it contains a lot of calcium and protein.
My mother is dairy free and so is my daughter. Often gluten intolerence can be associated with it... and porridge contains gluten.

Great suggestions, thank you all very much! Will print this off when I get to work tomorrow as have no printer at home and give them all a try and see what the outcome is. Hopefully I'll get on with at least one of the alternatives suggested but if it turns out to be the porridge, then I'll be back for your help again

my kids only ever have it with water (DS had it with milk last week and could barely eat it!)

goats milk does seem to be an acquired taste

I used to make it up for my dc's with apple juice or apple juice & water before they started on cows milk.

tasted yummy, could you count the juice as one of your 5 a day as well? Or could you use pureed apple to make it lower GI?

Curlylox · 11/10/2009 21:56

I can use all of the above to make in the confines of a microwave then?

Use cold water on your pan after making porridge, it slips off.
