help with breakfast for ds - with milk/soya intolerance

Hi. Am new here and going a little crazy trying to find breakfast ideas for DS, who is 9mths.

He had a reaction to milk and soya in my diet from b/f and we've had appointments at the hosp with this. Problem went away within days of me giving it up.

I've got Cow & Gate Pepti but when I tried it his skin flared up so will give another go before going back to the dietician.

But it's so hard to find things for breakfast for him as everything has soya or milk derivatives. I've tried him on bagels, which he likes but his skin flares up so I'm careful with wheat. Same with rice and quinoa in Plum baby foods. Avoiding egg until he's a year because he reacts to even the slightest amount of milk/soya in my diet.

Have recently tried Orgran buckwheat pancakes using water and baby fruit puree in place of milk and eggs, and he likes them but we can't have that every morning. And not sure if their apple and cinnamon version is okay for him? Has anyone tried them?

Have also bought a breadmaker so we'll soon be able to have that.

Any other ideas, as feel desperate to get him to eat properly.

Thanks in advance for help and sorry for rambling on in incoherent manner.

DD has similar food issues to your DS. I also had to stop bf. She was prescribed Neocate which I believe has no dairy at all, whereas the Cow and Gate is whey based, but the chemical composition has been altered to make it less allergenic. Neocate smells and tastes awful though, so we used to add vanilla and maple syrup to make it more palatable (dd was 15 mo though, so a bit older)

Does your ds like avocado? He could have some mashed up with toast fingers.

Porridge (made with water), with pureed fruit, cinnamon. Dietician advised us to add a couple of spoonfuls of Neocate formula to things like porridge or rice pudding to add calories.

Muffins (savoury varieties like pumpkin or sweet potato muffins add a bit more nutrional value). I use Orgran No-Egg replacer as dd is allergic to eggs.

Home made baked beans

We also got a bread maker which has really helped. It's pretty much impossible to buy bread without milk or soy added. The recipes that came with our bread maker all ask for skim milk powder. I just leave it out and the bread is still fine.

Your DS is probably less worried about variety that you are though. I wouldn't worry if breakfast is always similar - you can vary his lunch and dinner a lot more easily.

EachPeach- many breads esp white breads have milk in but may not say on the label 'milk' may be a derivative of it. Ask your dietitian for a list of what to look for on labels. About a gazillion foods have milk or dairy in. I was told that 70 % of supermarket foods have cows milk protein in and that's without cutting out wheat etc too. Supermarket shop takes flipping ages!
Foods like fishfingers, gravy etc also can contain milk products. Stuff you never dreamt of til you started looking!

By the way Mummiegee,
dd2 is 10 mo and she has either rice krispies, rice krispie shapes or oatibix made with formula. She is on Nutramigen AA after reacting to Pepti and normal Nutramigen. Those cereals are not ideal but only ones we've found which fit the bill so far. Kelkin do a porridge too but she hated it.
She also has apple and pear puree. We have similar age dcs so if I can help you more let me know, HTH.

My ds is the same age and also cannot have diary. I give him dry cereal that he can pick up with his fingers, and plenty of bf in the mornings.

I mean dairy not diary!

Hi, my DS2 has allergies to dairy, soya egg and wheat. He enjoys rice krispies, cornflakes or porridge made with oat milk. He also really likes these rolls www.food4celiacs.com/ShopOnline/NRG/200.html. If you scroll down you'll see them - tapioca dinner rolls. They're great toasted, with pure marge and jam! They taste a lot nicer than the other wheat free bread.

Thanks so much for your responses. Have had some success with porridge with water and fruit purees, but after a few days he just won't eat it.

Some days he'll eat a more savory Ella's Kitchen, but then won't. But try rice crispies. Tried Cornflakes with the pepti this morn and he took two spoonfuls then refused any more. His skin then came up, so will have to try the other formulas mentioned.

Thanks again for all your ideas, will let you know how I get on.

My DD is severely intolerant to dairy, soya & oats.

She is now on neocate and she has cereal (usually malties) with neocate for breakfast with fruit (ususally sliced banana)

However it is worth checking M&S bread as some of it is dairy/soya free.

Also DD does have muffins which are also ok.

Have also heard co op do donuts dairy/soya free. (not suggesting for breakfast BTW just in general )

Sainsburys do free from pancakes (although think they may have egg in I forget as DD ok with egg)

On a more positive note DD also reacts to tiny amounts of milk/soya but has always been ok with egg

Eachpeach - most bread has soya in it I think not milk.

Hope that puts your mind at rest

MummieGee, you could try Pepti Junior instead of Pepti. DS2 got eczema with Pepti but was fine with Pepti Junior. We used to use this on weetabix or shredded wheat for breakfast, though i notice you are avoiding wheat. We also gave him a couple of spoons of Ella's Kitchen puree with pepti junior and baby rice (to boost the calories as the purees are not too calorie dense). We also have a breadmaker which is great (and nothing nicer than waking up to the smell of fresh baked bread). If you want ideas of things to put on bread, holland and barrett do a pear and apple spread which is 100% fruit and really yummy.

Yes we are no cows milk protein so when I said bread has milk in that's what I meant!

Really? What bread has milk in it?

Good thread. I am in the same position as ds2 has milk and soya allergy and is on neocate. However I now think he is reacting to wheat too. Argh! My problem is trying to fill him up as struggling with food ideas. Finger food a nightmare as he has severe reflux and anything makes him gag and vomit. He can't seem to last from breakfast to lunchtime though without being starving. Bought everything free flax bread from waitrose yesterday and pure spread. Also Annabel Karmel does wheat, gluten, dairy, egg free pasta stars.
Also add a spoon of neocate to everything to try and up the calories. It is the foulest thing on the planet though...!

Sorry just to check I am giving ready brek with fruit in for brekkie or organix raspberry and apple cereal or the banana variety. Are these ok?

Report
girlsyearapart · 22/07/2009 09:46

Lots of bread esp white bread has soya flour or milk powder in. Given up looking at labels now anyway as dd2 also reacts to wheat so gave up on bread.
qumps- not sure about ready brek have never tried that.
Re snacks have you tried Rice Cakes? organix do a few different flavours they go quite soggy so may be ok for gagging problem?

Report
ilovemydogandmrobama · 22/07/2009 09:48

Rice cakes are quite popular here, with a bit of tahini as a snack.

qumps · 22/07/2009 12:06

Funnily enough managed a rice cake before lunch without gagging for the first time ever. Think ok if I give before the puree so then nothing to come back up. Have heard humous is good on rice cakes too.

Waitrose in Richmond yesterday. Bought 3 packets just incase I never see it again! Tried to give it unpureed but vomit central
If its any help they are doing 15% off Ocado at the moment but don't know how much you have to spend.

qumps - we are on neocate here too and I put it in most things now.

Oddly DD seems to like it

try dietary needs direct online they are very good and I have bought DD some chocolate puddings made from rice milk.

Also hipp organic banana rice pudding jar has no dairy/soya in.

DD still has this at 17mths for a pudding.
