Allergies and intolerances

Co-op doughnuts are egg free, dairy free and soya free, woo-hoo!!!!

I actually bought them for myself, but was surprised when I read the ingredients when I got them home that there was no egg in.

It was nice to be able to give DS a shop bought treat for a change.

Just thought I'd let all of you suffering on egg, dairy and soya free diets know too!!

They have wheat and gluten in them so sorry to thise of you that can't have those.

It is mainly oil,sugar,flour and raising agents I think.

It's the plum rasberry and apple jam filled doughnuts.

I noticed this too - their custard filled doughnuts are also egg/dairy free (don't know about soya, sorry). Not that DS ever gets near them...

Yes, the generic ones that Co-op put on all their baked goods - May Contain followed by a list of all the allergens that are required to be declared, which in my eyes completely devalues it. I have a feeling though they're baked/reheated in store, so there is a possibility of cross-contamination with, say, the pecan danish they also sell. It may be worth asking the staff.

Woo hoo !!

Presume they only sell doughnuts in the big Co-Ops though? We only have a little one in the village where we live

< seriously considers a half hour drive to the nearest big Co-Op this very morning >

the doughnuts come into the store frozen and are reheated instore.
most co-ops have the instore baking facility now, even the smaller ones.
all the produts are stored seperately and cooked on large trays, so shouldnt really be a cross contamination issue. hope this helps

As an aside, they also sell apple lattice slices that I know are egg and dairy free as DS has them - as an earlier poster said, it's nice to just be able to pick a sweet cakey treat up off-the-shelf for once!

don't buy items with nut warnings, would prefer my custom to go to other manufacturers who are not stupid.

I quite agree, this is the one exception I've made - tbh I'm quite surprised as Co-op are usually very good and sensible with their warnings. DS doesn't have a confirmed nut allergy though, only strong likelihood due to other allergies - I can see why you wouldn't take any chances. It's a good excuse to avoid Tesco though...

I've just checked the bag again and the product specific sticker only has an allergy warning for wheat and gluten.

There is a generic warning on the bakery bag, but I just ignored that.

I found them in my teeny corner co-op, so not just in big ones.

Will need to keep an eye out for the lattice slices.

tatt, where do you buy your food from then .

Local butcher, greengrocer, Sainsburys usually. Can't remember when or where I last bought doughnuts, though.

Can always make them with this egg free recipe - using stork softened to replace butter and a non-dairy milk. Be careful not to over fry.

Egg Free Doughnuts

Plain Flour - 3/4 cup
Strong Bread Flour - 1/4 cup
Instant Yeast - 2 teaspoons
Caster Sugar - 1 tablespoon
Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
Vanilla Extract - 1/2 teaspoon
Warm Milk - 1/2 cup
Softened Butter - 1 tablespoon
Method : Combine all the ingredients together, except for the butter and knead to a soft dough. Add butter and knead again till smooth and elastic. Cover and leave to rise till dough doubles, about 30 minutes. Roll out to 1/4" thick and cut out doughnuts with a cutter. Cover cut out doughnuts with a damp tea towel and leave to rise again. Lift out carefully and fry in hot oil over medium heat. Glaze them as you wish or toss in cinnamon sugar.

Amazing! I was just explaining what donoughts were to my 8 year old son. Just checked ingredients in various online supermarkets and all contained egg and milk.
Off to get him some doughnuts from Co-op tomorrow as an end of week treat!!
