please help re: nut allergy at nursery

Hello all, I'm hoping any mumsnetters with nut-intolerant lo's can help me out here. There is a little boy at my ds's nursery who has a nut allergy. I'm wondering does this include seeds as well, such as sunflower seeds etc? I'm asking because one of ds's favourite snacks is pine nuts, which are essentially a seed if I've read correctly, and I'd like to know if these are a no-go for nut allergy sufferers as well.

Seeds such as sunflower seeds are definitely not nuts so should be fine. Pine nuts are kind of a grey area (they are the seed of pine trees in the same way a hazelnut is the seed of a hazel tree) but quite a few nut allergic people do react to them also. They tend to be no-go for this reason.

The best thing would be to talk to the child's parents if you can, they will appreciate the fact that you are being considerate to their child's allergy. There are different types of nut allergy (tree nuts & ground nuts) and sometimes these encompass things like peas and beans etc!
