Egg Allergy - is vomiting a sign of the allergy?

My ds (9 months) is highly allergic to both raw and cooked egg.

The other day he ate some pasta from a friend (v studid me fogot to check the ingredients). About 5 hours later he woke up vomiting and was sick and retching for about 3 hours. Also had diarrohea for a couple of days. The pasta was the only thing that came up (other than milk). We haven't confirmed whether there was egg in the pasta, but assuming there was, is that a normal allergic reaction (or did he just have a short-lived stomach bug)?

thanks!

oh, forgot to say, seemed totally well and happy otherwise. His eczema was also bad, but I can't remember whether that was before or after the pasta incident.

Ds vomits when he has had a reaction to nuts, but that is usually instantly.

Hi,

This sounds very familiar.

My DD2 has an egg allergy. Before it was diagnosed, my mum invariably gave her egg pasta for Sunday lunch. DD2 would be sick on the drive back home to our house (perhaps two/three hours later). I don't remember any problems with her bum.

I understand (from t'internet) that some children with an egg allergy can tolerate egg pasta, but my DD is high on the egg allergy scale like your DS and won't be having it any more, poor thing.

Patsy

DS has an egg allergy, and the only time we gave him boiled egg (before the diagnosis) he had awful egg-smelling diarrhoea for about three days afterwards.

my dd was allergic to all egg (she has just had a successful egg trial though!!!). She would vomit within a few minutes - but would only vomit for a few minutes, not hours after

Hi My dd is allergic to egg (confirmed by skin prick test). She was sick two hours after having scrambled egg also developing hives.
We've been advised by the allergy specialist to keep her away from all egg (baked or in pasta/gravy etc) since - as that way she will be more likely to grow out of it. she's going back to have food challenges in a few months.
Hope that helps!

Ds2 has an egg allergy, very mild though according to the consultant allergy specialist. He had the skin prick test when he was about 9 months old and is now 14 months.

He had a reaction to undercooked sloppy scrambled eggs when we ate out once and came up with hives on his hands and face and all around his mouth. It was where the egg had touched his skin basically. He'd never reacted to well cooked egg though.

I was told to give him well cooked egg and gradually give him less well cooked egg and that by the time he was 2 he would have most likely grown out of it and be able to eat fried/soft boiled eggs etc.

He also said to keep a bottle of puriton with us all the time and give him some if he reacts to egg again. We can go back and see him again if we need to but so far we haven't.

He also has excema.

vomiting can be a sign of any allergy, not just to eggs.

you body recognises a dangerous substance as entered and the quickest and easiest route of rejection is to vomit it out.

many people vomit the minute they swollow the food, many vomit a few hours later. some however don;t and just end up with runny bums, but IME with my kiddies, the stronger the allergy, the higher the likelyhood that they will vomit.

the reason I would say that he took a whwile with the pasta is that pasta takes a long time to break down in the stomach so it would have taken longer for the egg to have become apparent in it.

I think that's right Psychomum5 - when the pasta came up it wasn't even digested at all.. probably the body tried to break it down, and as soon as it recognised the foreign substance it came up again..?

naturopath- yes, vomiting and retching for hours is a reaction to food! my dd had same reaction to rice cereal... was diagnosed with "food protein induced enterocolitis syndrome" (fpies). even though she tested negative for all allergies with a skin-prick test she's severely allergic to milk/soy/rice and we were told to also avoid poultry. so scary isn't it?

Ds vomited at around 6pm after stealing some bread with egg glaze at lunchtime. He was also very ill and listless/floppy and in pain.

Pressed send too soon. He had something with a lot more egg in it (and ate more of it) and was sick more or less straight away.
