Allergies and intolerances

DD1 (3.11) - stomach cramps and upset tummy - seems to be after milk?

My DD has been having tummy ache since the start of December. She had pain around her belly button about 3-4 times a day but no other symptoms.

Took her to the Dr at the start of January and he said it sounded like take colic. He took a urine sample to rule out uti. This came back with white blood cells but then a 2nd sample was clear.

She seemed ok for a week but has recently been getting diorreah (sp) and pain. We cut out milk for approx 10 days and things slowly seemed to improve. Then we re-introced milk (DD loves it) but she seems to get a tummy pain almost immediately after the milk. This afternoon she had severe tummy bpain and then had to go straight to the toilet after having some milk.

So, does this sound like the after effects of a nasty bug?
Would a reaction to milk be so immediate?
What should I do?

Could she just be lactose intolerant, fgs? I get a reaction to lots of milk immediately afterwards. You can get lactase drops to put in milk or lactose free whole milk which is quite tasty. What you've tried so far points to that, but check the symptoms against what she's experiencing. ((hugs))

I hope it's that easy fgs! I've found I can eat quite a lot of dairy but milk will often upset me, I never have milkshakes for instance as I'd get your dd's symptoms.

I agree that it could be lactose intolerance. Also, AQ and I have unfortunately had lots of experience with our ds's and fecal impactions. They get what seems to be diarrhea but it's actually seepage (sorry, tmi) around the blockage and tummy ache was a big complaint. Dairy was one thing we had to cut way down on.

It was after a milkshake she had a sore tummy and a great big poo. I think it's too much to be seepage iykwim. The other day she did 3 quite big runny poos for example.

My DS2 was having similar problems (stomach cramps, loose stools, etc). Refered to Paed specialising in allergies when he was 18months. Discovered he has IBS and dairy intolerance. Not all dairy intolerances are shown up during testing, exclusion diets best way to tell. You could try dairy free diet for a couple of weeks see if sympoms improve, tho need to make sure you provide enough calcium else where in diet, (calcium enriched rice milk or oat milk are good)

Are they kind of big fluffy poos though?

It does sound like lactose intolerance, tbh.

Hi Jabber, Yes quite big fluffy poos. Is that good or bad?

Well, those are the kind ds1 was having when he had his impaction. That was before the actual seepage problem started. It's very easy for them to tell. The dr. just does a quick rectal exam and can literally feel the impaction (I know, ewwwww).

Ok, 2 days with no fruit juice and no milk and things look to be improving. I've ordered some probiotic drink in my online shop too so fingers crossed we can get back to normal and then try re-introducing the drinks and see if either has an effect.

That's great, fgs. It might be citrus as well that was causing problems, a lot of people find it too acidic (including me! upsets my tummy every time).
