Please can someone advise, with the current covid-19 situation I am stuck trying to work out what is wrong with my son because the doctors are not interested.

He is 10 weeks old and I was unable to produce enough breast milk for him so started combine feeding with cow and gate when he was 3 weeks, he was always very fussing and then he broke out in a terrible rash on his face that looked like he had been burnt, this progressed to his chest. I took him to the doctor's and they said it could be neonatal acne but the reflux and discomfort carried on, we tried Aptimal anti reflux which stopped him being so sick but his rash stayed, which was then diagnosed as eczema. He was then given a prescription for simalic alimentum which he took for a couple of weeks, his symptoms started to improve and rash cleared up, also started to sleep a little longee at night, but the smell was so bad I couldn't hold him for long because it made me feel sick so I asked if there was an alternative so we have now been prescribed sma alther, I was also concerned that it doesn't contain lactose so I don't want him missing out if he is not intolerant to it.

After 4 days on this his rash seems to flare up and he has a very dry and itchy scalp, sleep isn't good and is spitting up.

Does this sound like a whey intolerance? Or lactose intolarence? Or maybe I should try something like Kendamil which might be softer on his stomach?

Please advise as it is driving me crazy.

cows milk protine intolerance? My son has this. Ezema like rash and miserable.

He was on a hydrolised formula - aptamil pepti 1. Still has normal lactose but the cows milk protine is broken down.

He is 2.5 year now and can only tolerate UHT milk, not fresh because the protines are broken down in the heat of UHT.

Id ring the GP and ask for a trial of aptamil pepti or pepti junior. We tried a few others first like neocate i think... but they smelt.rank and he wouldnt drink it.

Google the difference between lactose intolerancr and cows milk protine allergy.

Best of luck x

Like PP said, it's most probably Cow's Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA). Have a read of this from Allergy UK before you ring the GP back.

You need either a hydrolysed formula or a dairy free formula. Your GP can prescribe either. I think you may just have to get over the smell too for the sake of your baby Smile

They can taste pretty horrible as well as the smell, try putting a couple of drops of vanilla essence in the bottle to make it more appealing.

I feel you mama. Sounds like cmpa cows milk protein allergy. My daughter is 7weeks old we have being battling cmpa since she was 5weeks. We tried everything on the shelves and she reacted to it. I picked it up as she started getting hives, break out on the face which end up being really dry. And diagnose as eczema. We r on pepti junior to trial for 4 weeks and day 5 today saw a little improvement. Maybe you could ask you GP to trial as it need to be prescribe. Doesn’t help when the country is on lock down and GP doesn’t do face to face contact it’s sucks. I hope something comes up for bubs ASAP.

Our little one has cmpa we asked the gp for a one tin trial, they were very happy to do this. Rather than keep issuing prescriptions for creams etc for the rash. Within 24 hours we could tell a difference.

Sorry we use apatmil pepti we had it for our first but for our second they wanted to use sma however we requested aptamil as the consultant recommended due to still having some lactose for our first.

Not all babies tolerate it though and require the sma or similar.
