Hi. My 11 month old has been diagnosed with a wheat, egg and nut allergy and I am looking for breakfast ideas please?
Lunch and dinner seems to be going ok( but ideas welcome) however I'm getting worried as shes coming upto 1 now and has started to reduce her milk intake
Thanks in advance

Porridge with fruit and yogurt?

It's a good way of getting some milk in, can be made with ebm, formula or any shop bought milk.

What about porridge made with oat milk? With fruit added?

Thank you both. She has porridge most days but I didnt think to use a different type of milk to switch it up. Will also try adding different fruits too!

You don' have to eat "breakfast foods" for breakfast. You can eat anything e.g. fried rice

@hitsnooze We use frozen fruit for our porridge - stir it in as soon as it comes out of the microwave/off the hob and the heat of the porridge defrosts it.

Small berries can go in whole, bigger fruit can be chopped even when frozen (it sort of falls apart as you cut it). Tesco do a mix of pre chopped fruit called breakfast topper which is good. Sometimes I stew something like apples or rubarb and then freeze in ice cube trays.

I also sometimes make a smoothie out of greek yogurt, frozen fruit and prune puree, then mix this into the porridge.

Can you tell that we are a big fan of porridge in our house (well my children are anyway, I hate the stuff) 😄

There's lots of gluten free substitutes available in the supermarkets so e.g. toast and cheese or jam is easy enough to make wheat free.

Fruit is OK so bananas, grapefruit, berries, fruit juice etc all fine. I buy frozen berries, stew with maple syrup and have with greek yogurt. Delicious.

Cooked breakfast minus the eggs is fine as well, sausages, bacon, mushrooms, fried potatoes, tomatoes, beans.

Adjusting to allergies is a pain but once you get used to it it's fine.

My DS (now 18mo) is wheat/dairy/soya allergic and at that age was also intolerant to oats too, which removed porridge from our options.

I relied a lot on:

  • banana,
  • coconut yoghurt (not sure if yours can tolerate coconut, some can depending on the type of nut allergy),
  • gluten free bread toasted (not sure which brands avoid egg, if there aren't any readily available then you could spread toast-style toppings on oat cakes)

We mostly used peanut butter as a toast topping, as he was underweight and it's calorie dense, but there's a range of alternative nut butters available so you might be able to have one of them (ie peanut if your LO is tree nut allergic or vice versa) or even sunflower seed butter (although that one's not in all supermarkets).

There are some really supportive Facebook groups - I found them a real crutch in terms of ideas and support when first navigating weaning with allergies, especially one for parents of children with multiple food allergies.

My daughter used to enjoy rice cakes with mashed banana or other soft fruits. For breakfast
