My DS who is now 5, started having problems with his tummy a couple of years ago after a long course of antibiotics. He started shooting his poos out like torpedos then after a few months it turned to mucus, slimy and watery poo which stank Confused! The doctors did Celiac test and it was negative so I posted on here and many of you suggested I try and go GF. I did this last Easter and within a week he was back on track. We discovered along the way that he also can't handle something in squash so all he drinks is water and pure juice mixed with water. A year later and we are starting to get the poos like torpedos again and on holiday he had a bad tummy every day which was a nightmare. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? I have noticed that after swimming he often has a bad poo and he was swimming everyday on hols.

We continue down this road after almost a year of antibiotics in early life sent DS digestive system to outer space. Exactly same in that not celiac but glutton 'hurts' and upset stomach. Also same with the sweeteners in juice. Also the same with fatty foods and too much sweet stuff (holidays/festivals times always dreadful). We currently seeing paediatric dietician at local hospital to go through elimination diet, wouldn't do it without her. Consultant also prescribed Biokult capsules to try to restore healthier balance in gut. For us, already history of serious allergy, eczema asthma so this likely to be low level allergy that can linger in digestive system for ages causing havoc, which makes analysing diet diaries tricky hence elimination diet. Really hope it is just a flare up and it settles when back into usual routine.

Possibly unusual bugs (ie novel as another country) have caused his gut to become inflamed again. It may have been sweeteners in the squash so watch out for those. If you haven’t yet used probiotics I would definitely start. Cytoplan and nutriwest do good quality kids ones

Waiting to see the dietitian again but appointment is in July. Will give the good gut bacteria a try. Really hope it is a blip

We find holiday times of year hard with our oldest. Too much sugar. Too much fat. Too many additives and his stomach plus behaviour just get really poor.

It's quite tiresome!

Hope you get some answers soon.

I basically started forgetting substitution of items. And just ate protein (meat fish etc) with veg or salad. Honestly didn't feel deprived at all

We started some prebiotics and there is some improvement. Still a bit windy but the watery mucus hasn't been seen for a while. Fingers crossed

@Straysocks just wondered how you have got on with your dietician? My DS is still suffering with his bowel problems despite various diet changes, probiotics and visits to the doctors/dieticians. Every time I think we have cracked it after a few months the symptoms come back again

Look into SIBO- Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth.

I second @RhythimIsRhythim and also suggest looking into gluten cross reactive foods such as Corn, Millet, Oats, Rice. When you eat those foods, even though they don’t contain gluten, your body reacts as though they do. You can do a fantastic job of remaining completely gluten-free but still suffer all of the symptoms of gluten consumption—because your body still thinks you are eating gluten.

I think I have finally found out why my DS was getting these problems. Last year during lockdown we noticed his stomach problems vanished completely and I put it down to an age thing. Then after one swimming lesson it all came back overnight and it took about 10 days to get back to normal.  He started swimming at the age of 3 and absolutely loves it so I feel really upset that it is the chlorinated water that is having this affect on him.  I guess we will be hitting the beach from now on Smile
