Allergies and intolerances

What am I doing wrong? Do I need to stop breastfeeding?

Realised about three weeks ago my 5 1/2 month old non-sleeper has a dairy and egg allergy, cut both out of my diet completely along with soy on doctors advice and vomiting almost disappeared though had serious symptoms of silent reflux. We're now ten days on losec mups but since last Thursday the vomiting has returned.

I've just had to completely change her, I think there may have been faint blood in last spit up, her breath is so acidy and she can't sleep. The vomiting has got worse over weekend I think.

I've been so careful with diet. Can this be the result of eating something in error once or twice last week? Ive realised I had a bowl of alpen which contains skimmed milk powder. Or a new allergen? How can I begin to identify what that would be?

Would she be better off if I stopped breastfeeding and switched to a special formula? Im so miserable watching her be so unable to get comfortable. I'd be devastated to give up breastfeeding but don't know what I can do to figure this all out.

Yes it could be the Alpen. DS has delayed allergies to dairy, soy and egg and I breastfed for a long time. You will have slip ups every now and then and It will be the same when you start solids.

Don't beat yourself up, it very hard being 100% free of allergens, soy especially is in everything.

Thank you. I think I struggle a lot to know what is passed on in breastmilk and what isn't.

A possibly stupid question but we're starting her on infant probiotics: if I was taking probiotics as well could that positively impact her? Or if I drink coke/eat rubbish which I've been doing too much of due to the sleep deprivation, could that be negative?

She had six different types of antibiotics before she was three weeks old and I strongly suspect they have contributed to all her tummy problems but I don't really know what beyond breastfeeding I can do.

I’ve had quite a few slip ups where I’ve eaten something with dairy in it by mistake or where is says may contain and it definitely does. Then had the a very long night with a screaming toddler.
Don’t be too hard on yourself, dairy egg and soya are very difficult to eliminate from your diet.

No, eating and drinking rubbish, if it doesn't contain allergens won't affect her, it's not your fault. Her gut will massively benefit from the beneficial bacteria she is in contact with from your breasts, I personally would be confident in that rather that introducing a probiotic. It sounds massively tough for you both x

This is tough and it is hard work. The Alpen had milk in it so that will have had an impact. Any good food you eat will have a positive impact on her, so probiotics, natural and supplements are likely to be beneficial and it is also quite likely that sugar in your diet will also have an adverse effect on her. If all of her nutrition is coming from you, then if you can ensure it is as best as it can be, she stands the best chances of recovering but 6 lots of antibiotics, which might indeed have been absolutely necessary at the time, plus 5 months of vomiting, takes a long time to recover from. Healthy fats, vitamin A, probiotics, lots of leafy greens, vegetable juices, limit grains, processed foods and additives. Good luck and take care of yourself.
