Need to go dairy free due to BF

Hi there,

I've been advised to cut out dairy as the GP believes my baby might be intolerant.

Just really asking if anyone can recommend some milk and butter substitutes ?

Also is there anything I'm missing? I know I can't have milk, cheese, butter etc.. but I'm guessing I can still have things like bread?

Any help much appreciated!

Me too - 5 weeks in! I’ve found the Flora nondairy spread to be the nicest one I’ve tried and also Vegan Magnums are great. Violife is the best cheese substitute and Tesco grated nondairy mozzarella is ok.

I think Almond and Rice milk are the nicest milks substitutes. Cashews are one of my favourite nuts but the milk was horrible imo.

Calcium supplements also important.

Where can you get calcium supplements from ? The supermarket?

Thanks

Sorry OP you need to check everything. Milk seems to be hidden in almost everything, including bread. Don’t worry though, there are lots of breads and other things you can have, you just need to check the labels of the ones you like.

If you’re buying a substitute milk, try to go for one that is fortified. I particularly like almond milk but try a few till you find one you like. Apoaraent,y Oatley Barista is good in coffee.

McVities Fig Rolls are DF as are most Bourbon biscuits. Justo pastry is DF, we like their Pain Au Chocolat and Blueberry Pancakes make a nice breakfast, just swap the cow’s milk for almond milk.

Just wondering if LO is improving yet too? Thanks

Second the Oatley Barista recommendation, love that stuff!! If you like coconut milk that's lovely, and hazelnut milk.
Coconut collaborative do great ice creams (Sainsbury's/Waitrose) and gorgeous choc pots that are like ganache.

Just check the labels on everything, milk will always be in bold on the ingredients list as it's a common allergen

Vitalite is what I use for butter. Aldi party rings and their Oreos are DF.
Be sure to check each ingredient each time you shop, I got caught out when they changed the recipe of bourbons (my fave) to include milk, and it never said on the front of the packet, I didn't realise and took them and my wee one started reacting and it wasn't until I saw a FB post online saying the recipe had changed that I realised what it was.

Check out CMPA breastfeeding group on FB, excellent for DF finds in shops and great advice.

Thanks. Will deffo check out the fb group.

Only on day 3 and it hasn't made much of a difference so far Hmm although she was more settled at night time.

I've got almond milk sweetened which I don't hate but I will deffo check out the oatley milk. Bought the flora vegan butter which I really didn't like all I could taste was oil Envy.

Thanks for the tip on the Aldi biscuits. I just assumed they all had butter in Grin

I don’t like the Flora spread either MOB, much prefer Pure. Lots of Lidl’s food is DF. They do a lovely almond and orange chocolate bar.

Glad LO is more settled at night too Smile

@MOB247 I think it can take a good couple of weeks for it to fully leave your system so fingers crossed things will continue to improve xx

How are you getting on with this OP? Do you think it has made a difference?

I had to do the same and also recently gave up soy too which has helped. I find milk/ soy is hidden in loads of different breads so have started buying substitutes now. Really missing pizza/ cheese / chocolate!

Hi - I think it has made a bit of difference but not loads. My babies skin has just broken out with loads of baby acne too.

Might need to give the soy a miss too then

I've also started SW this week and aparantly I need 4-6 healthy extra As which as I am dairy free is very hard. I'm struggling with one!

With those mums whose baby is intolerant to dairy how long was it before you saw a noticeable difference in your baby?

I'm dairy free. Oat milk is the best milk replacement imo and the shop bought one has more calcium than dairy milk!

Gave up all soy milk and dairy products on Tuesday. By Friday I had a completely different baby. Could be that she’s almost 4 months though and the colic is stopping but I think she does have an intolerance. I’ll introduce it back in soon to see. Smile

DS is allergic to dairy soy and eggs. I would try cutting all three out and seeing how you go for 4-6 weeks then reintroducing one by one to see if you get a reaction.

It's tough but worth it. DS is 6 now and still allergic to dairy and soy. He found always tolerate baked eggs when I was breastfeeding. Might me worth using the egg/milk ladders for you when you challenge.

Oat milk is fortified with calcium and actually often has more than cows milk. Also you can get dairy free yoghurts now with calcium in.
