Allergies and intolerances

13 month old with inconsistent constipation

My 13 month old DS became constipated for no obvious reason in January and stayed that way until mid April. He was on various medications in that time but a softener called Laxido seemed to finally help him over come it. We also tried increasing his fibre intake and plying him with prunes etc. but they had no effect.

He's been off the Laxido now for about a month and he's gone back to being constipated in the last few days. So he's now back on Laxido. We haven't added or changed anything in his diet. He drinks plenty of fluids. He's also allergic to cow's milk, so he's completely dairy free (since he was 5 months) and on soya milk daily instead.

He has a referral to a constipation clinic in June (been waiting since March) but i cant bear to see him screaming, shaking and crying in pain every day when he tries to poo/ manages to go and tears his bum. It's so distressing.

Is there anything else we can try? Any advice would be so very welcome. TIA.

I saw a consultant recently for my 17 month old's constipation which she's suffered with since birth. He said the majority of children have digestive problems and things like Movicol and Laxido need to be used consistently for anywhere from 6-24 months until they are going at least once a day. It's a fallacy to say they shouldn't have to rely on laxatives for extended periods of time but many GPs will wrongly claim they become reliant on them and develop lazy bowels. There's no truth in this though apparently.

Sorry that's not much help but just a heads up that the consultant you see may tell you something similar! And I paid £200 for the privilege Sad

@WTFdidwedo Thank you! Your advice is actually very helpful! Sorry you've had such a rough time of it and it's cost you so much money Sad Flowers I don't know about you, but I feel like poo is my specialist subject. My DS had explosive diarrhea for the first 6 months of his life due to his cows milk allergy going undiagnosed until then. Was so happy when it all settled down and became 'normal'. Just wish it had lasted longer than 2-3 months!

Our GP discouraged us from using the Laxido long term and encouraged us to take him off of it once we saw improvement, which is exactly what we did. I didn't realise it would possibly need to be something he takes in the long term.

During those golden 2-3 months my DS used to go twice a day. You could set your watch by him! I've no idea why that suddenly stopped.
