Histamines in wine?!

So I've read that a fair few wines contain histamines after noticing that I get a painfully stuffy/snotty/blocked nose every time I have a glass of wine.

It continues through the night and by morning I am a sneezing wreck. I never used to have this reaction until over the last few weeks, having said that I never used to drink this regularly in the evening. Could this be an allergy I have perhaps developed from drinking too much wine?! Hmm

I am quite sensitive to dust as well so I'm sure that may aggravate it throughout the night. It's so bad that I am sat up in bed at 3am at time searching for air purifiers..!!

I'm not drinking this evening so I'll see what happens Confused

My friend had this reaction to red wine she took antihistamines before drinking it! Xmas Smile

Yep - this happens to me - I also get an itchy rash! Whiskey makes me sneeze and wheeze like crazy.
I think I'm sensitive to all alcohol so don't usually drink, but good champagne and gin limits reactions. Welcome to the dry side!

Yes, I have a bad allergicreaction to my favourite red wines. I think my DM does too.

Some white wine makes me and my mum flare up in red blotches. No itching or sensation but it’s embarrassing because it is so visible. Antihistamines do seem to calm it.

God. What a damn shame. This never happened before. Does it come with age?! I'm nearly 30.

This morning after no alcohol last night I only have my usual semi blocked nose probably from dust/carpet. Not nearly as bad.

Good explanation of histamines and wine here www.livestrong.com/article/481463-histamine-effects-of-drinking-wine/

I find that I can't drink red wine at all as I flush instantly and get a headache within 2 sips. With white wine it really depends on the wine, some are fine others awful.
I take anti-histamines to mitigate the effects but they don't completely work.
I have found through trial and error what wine is ok for me.

I have an auto immune disease and take immunosuppressants and have found that I have developed allergies over the years quite out of the blue (certain fruits give me a full anaphylactic reaction which I found out a few years back after being able to eat them fine before that) and the issues with wine have been worst in the past 5years.

This happens to me too, OP. It started at age 34 and seemed to just happen one day, embarrassingly in a nice restaurant, and I was drinking white wine.
I continued to drink wine as it didn't affect me every single time so if I found a wine that didn't affect me, I'd make a note of it and choose it again. Antihistamines helped slightly but I preferred to avoid wine after a while. It became too much of a hassle.
I haven't had wine in over a year. I don't miss the sneezing and blocked nose!

Regarding your dust allergy, my friend suffers terribly from this and said her Dyson air purifier that she paid around £220 for was worth every penny.

It's the sulphites in wine that get me, give that histamine reaction. I'm ok with most organic wines if you can check for ones low in sulphites.

Ooh I get a stiff neck, pains in my upper arms and feel sick when I drink some wines. I've decided it's not really worth it Blush

Thanks for the Dyson air purifier recommendation - I'll look into that one.

Glad I'm not the only one getting the vino sniffles. What a damn shame... I'm sure the scales will thank me for it though Hmm
