Greggs mince pies

thenewaveragebear1983 Sun 03-Dec-17 15:34:19

Nothing to add but watching this thread as I have a dairy free guest this year!

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic Sun 03-Dec-17 16:37:18

Do you need any recipes thenewaverage? Have you asked them if they like dairy substitutes, like Oatly Cream, and which bread they prefer? 🙂

Leatherboundanddown Sun 03-Dec-17 16:43:30

Co op apple pies for those who don't like mince pies. Co op ginger bread iced Christmassy things on lollypops (great deacription haha)

Last year had some great stuff from Aldi maybe stollen bites and I can't remember what it was called but a spiced and nut chocolate round thing covered in icing sugar it was DELICIOUS hopefully someone can help me out with the name

Leatherboundanddown Sun 03-Dec-17 16:44:29

Most ready made gingerbread tends to be dairy free actually.

Leatherboundanddown Sun 03-Dec-17 16:45:12

Jus rol pastry rolls (fridge and freezer types) if you need to make any canapes/own pies

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic Sun 03-Dec-17 16:48:27

Thanks for that Leather but I have no idea what you have eaten from Aldi 😀

How could I forget the Spived biscuits from Lidl? 🙂

Thanks everyone, to be honest I haven't considered the options yet. It's my dsis, who isn't technically dairy free (as in, she herself isn't allergic) but she's BF and her baby is allergic to cows milk protein (undiagnosed). So I am not really sure where to start. I know she won't expect 'special treatment' - but I assumed I could just remove her portions of roasties/mash/veg before adding butter. What would you recommend to replace butter?

The one sticking point for me is the turkey- I usually use a sage butter under the skin of the turkey, so not sure as yet what to do instead of that to keep the turkey moist.

I thought I'd get her a small individual pudding that's DF if the large ones all contain dairy?

GreenBook Sun 03-Dec-17 17:54:15

Tesco do a non dairy Christmas pudding - I've ordered that with cream for everyone else and soya cream for me.

And Bendicks mint selection, of course.

Lidl stollen was dairy free last year (I haven't checked yet this year).

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic Sun 03-Dec-17 18:19:08

You can add oatly cream or vitalife to mash. Could you cover the turkey with bacon to keep it moist?

Not all Christmas puddings contain dairy, think you just need to check the labels on any you fancy. This Christmas Pudding at Sainsburys is DF if that helps? What will yiu be serving it with? Alpro do a Soya custard if that helps.

It’s probably a bit daunting to cater for her as if she’s given dairy by mistake she’s going to have a pretty horrendous Christmas with a screaming baby. I was given dairy a few christmases ago and it was 2 weeks before I’d recovered fully.

Feel free to ask anything in here though 🙂

Just seen my post further up. It’s Spiced biscuits. Spived biscuits just sound a bit weird hmm

imsorryiasked Sun 03-Dec-17 18:34:53

I always have one of these in the freezer Dairy Free Apple strudel

Gregg's mince pies are dairy free?!! This is the best news ever. Thank you!! I'd given up on Gregg's because everything had dairy!

If anyone is missing Bailey's they've just brought out one with almond milk.

Bear, I use Flora dairy free spread, it tastes like margarine but it does the job!

IsItThursdayYet Sun 03-Dec-17 18:51:49

Oatly do a custard and a cream, so if you're like me and can't have soya either that's a good option.

thenewaveragebear1983 Sun 03-Dec-17 19:06:27

Thank you everyone. I will definitely be asking more questions as it gets nearer to the day. Do you do your whole meal dairy free then, or just do DF for the one(s) who need it? I think I'll just separate potatoes and veg to do DF for dsis, because I can't really stomach margarine, and then give the option on the day for either nothing added, or dairy free spread. With other prepared foods, I suppose it's just essential to check everything even if it's not something I'd expect to contain dairy. I might look for that oatly cream as well, that sounds nice.

GreenBook Sun 03-Dec-17 19:13:57

I do mash with mayonnaise (full fat, the low fat ones have cream in, weirdly), as Pure doesn't seem to work as well. Mayonnaise works very well, if you can have egg.

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic Sun 03-Dec-17 20:10:06

I do DF everything but then I’m the one with CMPA and I’m the one doing the cooking 🙂

I find it easier to do just DF for everyone and not tell them. People seem to think they are missing out on something if you tell them a Food is DF whereas if they don’t know, they usually compliment you on how nice the food is. People are weird 😀

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic Sun 03-Dec-17 20:11:02

^Green* think i’ll try that with the Mayo. Thanks 🙂

Halebeke425 Sun 03-Dec-17 20:14:11
