Allergies and intolerances

Please help, does this sound like CMPA?

Hi, apologies in advance for the long post.
I'm looking for advice with my 9 week old son as I feel helpless at the moment. We keep going to the doctors and asking for help but we don't seem to get anywhere.

Could anyone tell me if this sounds like cows milk protein intolerence/allergy:

  • explosive diarrhoea, completely liquid stools, very smelly too. He trumped whilst my OH changed him and she was covered in projectile diarrhoea :/ (this has been ongoing since week 5)

  • crying and inconsolable after feeds. Could only get relief from holding him upright over my shoulder.

  • he now cries during feeding as well, arching of back, pulling his legs up. It's got the the point now where he even starts at the beginning of a feed, as soon as the bottle is offered he will cry and pull away.

We have made numerous trips to the doctors as we don't know what to do, we are both becoming very stressed and dread feeding time. We've been given infacol, gaviscon, then a lactose free milk and this weekend I managed to persuade a walk in centre doctor to prescribe aptamil pepti.

Since we've started the pepti, the diarrhoea has gone. For the first time in over a month we have had a normal stool. The fussing at feeds seems to be getting better.

We've been back to our gp today to see if we could possibly see a specialist to help us and get a repeat prescription for the pepti. He rang a specialist and told them the symptoms and we were told as our son hasn't lost weight, he doesn't have an allergy.

So just as I thought we were getting somewhere, we are back to square 1, with no diagnosis or help.

Don't know what to do Sad

Forgot to add, unsure whether its of any relevance. But I've noticed my son usually sounds like he has a cold and he snorts quite a lot. Makes a lot of noise breathing whilst asleep.

I have always suffered from really bad hayfever if that makes any difference too.

I'm so sorry you're having such a rubbish time of it. I remember how stressful it was when my DS was young and undiagnosed.

Does he have any other symptoms? Any skin reactions, for example?

Keep trying different doctors. There is such misunderstanding. You have every right to ask for a federal and dietician appointment. My son had similar symptoms but with a rash. It's horrible when you know there is something wrong with your baby and doctors don't believe you. Also try the cmpa facebook groups. They're amazing.

It's horrendous isn't it when you feel not listened too. I am in the same boat and can sympathise. My son is only 3 weeks old but can see CMPA traits already as my DD had it bad.
I've been doctors twice and they keep homing in on this rash. You dc symptoms definitely sound like CMPA every child has different symptoms and not all have to be present. My DD was diagnosed due to her constant screaming and diarrhoea never had a rash or sicky. I hope you get answers too I also will be returning to doctors.fed up with being fobbed off. Mothers know best!

Tdra, we were told that it couldn't be allergies as my son was chubby (90th centile for weight, tho short). It very much was allergies. Thankfully I was breastfeeding and could go dairy (and soy and nut and egg) free without a prescription.

Start a very detailed food diary with feed times etc and all symptoms then take to the doc. They will see the reactions over time... and it will be v useful when you get the allergy referral
