Hi has anyone ever tried kinesiology for IBS and other medical issues? I am getting pretty desperate at the moment but I don't want to waste money in something that doesn't work.

I've read the older threads here about it but there were very mixed views and the threads are quite old...

Can anyone help?xx

My FIL is an 'expert' in kinesiology. Actual scientific research shows its ineffective.

no, dont go down that route.

have you tried a Fodmapp diet?
going to GP and trying Amitriptyline?, low dose taken at night. An anti depressant, this works as more nerve ending on bowel than in brain, also helps with bloating as well as pain.
Ask GP for referral and perhaps a confirmation of IBS with a colonoscopy.

Good luck.

thank you Greaterthanthesumofhteparts canteatcustard. I've been to my GP and I was diagnosed 10 years ago with both IBS and IBD and I've been ok for the most part of these 10 years by avoiding dairy and gluten, but lately it has become worse again. My GP is useless...she recommended peppermint tea and a hot water bottle. She did refer me to a consultant but it will take 20 weeks for my first appointment and she gave no immediate treatment for now, hence my despair...

Are you talking about applied kinesiology (muscle response to food)? I would step away, it's a load of codswallop.

Find a reputable dietician who can guide you through low FODMAP. It's a pain, but definitely worth it in the end.

I have been on and off the diet over the years. when pain very bad, I start the diet.
however I followed it last year, and found that add back foods wasnt working that was when I got referred again and put on the low dose anti depressant and the combination has helped the pain and bloating.
I can now eat a wider diet, but need to stick to being milk and onion free!
I am able to have a splash of milk in my tea, which was impossible last summer.
My IBS and bowel damage is the result of a bout of life threatening food poisoning over ten years ago. So this is going to be a long term thing to control.

It doesn't work, it won't work - any benefits you get will be from the 'therapist' telling you what they tell pretty much anyone with food symptoms - cut out sugar/dairy/refined products or whatever else they can think of and that you have probably already tried yourself. They will claim that it's mostly due to their magic magnets, muscle massage or whatever else but it's bollocks. You'll have wasted your money and be no further forward.

There is always wide ranging debate and anecdotes about complementary/alternative medicine but AK is at the far end of the bollocks spectrum and is positively dangerous in its practices when it comes to treating diet related issues. Including fatalities in people with 'allergies' that were 'treated' using AK.

If you've read this thread on here, all the points still stand I reckon - there's been no great legitimising of AK since then, no studies proving its efficacy and the NHS and reputable practictioners still advise against it.

I tried it in desperation about ten yeats ago - I was at the 'try anything' stage. Also for IBS. The recommendations worked, but, as has been said, the dietary changes were pretty standard so I think it was following them rather than any benefits from the muscle testing that helped.
One practical thing which seemed to help a lot was timing my drinks: one hour after or half an hour before a meal. Took some time to get used to, especially only being able to sip on water during a meal, but it did help get things more regular. I also used to drink about a pint of water half an hour before breakfast. Made me wee like a good'un but regulated the old bowels! Again, that's a practical step rather than any result of muscle testing as such.
