Hi all

I've got myself in a tizz about DS2 who is just 2, he and I have been excluding religiously all dairy and gluten since he was about 3 months old, and have only recently re introduced cooked egg successfully.

early this year we started the milk ladder, we got as far as cooked milk in GF scotch pancakes which was fine, but when a family member accidentally cooked him regular english pancakes ( a lot more milk per portion) he ended up with runny nappies for a few days so I just stopped it all completely and he's hardly had any dairy since then. We are managing just fine without it, and while I'd love him to be over it, I find the re introduction stage so stressful. Anyway last week on holiday I ate a tiny bit of cream sauce on some fish, and a bit of the topping on DS1's pizza. I was being a bit stupid really but I thought that seeing as he only BFs twice a day, and he coped with that little bit of milk in the scotch pancake that he'd be fine. A few days later I ate a roast potato that I later learned had been cooked with butter (seriously I have completely avoided all hidden dairy for 2 years, and then I did this!) Anyway, the last few days DS2s nappies have been awful. properly explosive and he's been really windy and grumpy.

I suppose I know the answer to this - he's still very sensitive - but I would have thought that by now a tiny bit in some bm should be ok. Should I hold off re starting the milk ladder for the time being? I'm so disappointed for him, he'll be starting nursery in september and I have hoped and prayed he'd be able to eat the same cooked lunches as everyone else.

Why is this all so stressful?!

Hi, I went through all this with DS2 and it was pretty miserable. He did mostly outgrow the intolerance around 2.5, and now he doesn't have milk to drink or on cereal, but is fine with cheese, yoghurt etc so it's not really restrictive. He did attend nursery on a dairy free diet and they had no problem catering for that.
My comment would be are you sure it's second hand dairy in BM that is upsetting him at the moment and not teething/virus/something he ate directly? I'd see traces in BM as the very bottom of the milk ladder, my son was fine with me having dairy from about 18m, long before he could to,state much directly. If he was ok with small amounts of cooked milk it seems unlikely that you eating small amounts would be an issue?
Whenever we got a reaction the advice was to back off and try again in a few months.
