Allergies and intolerances

Is anyone's baby on coconut milk?

DD is allergic to dairy and soya and I'm hoping to put her on coconut milk.

Is your LO on coconut milk? How have they taken to it?

How old is your baby? Babies under 1 need either breastmilk or infant formula, coconut milk wouldn't be suitable.

How old is she? I would not imagine it's anywhere near nutritious enough for a baby (doesn't contain enough protein or calcium). You can get fortified formulas with no intact milk proteins in them which might be a better choice, depending on age.

Most dairy substitutes are not recommended as a main drink for babies under 3 years.
Having said that my second child was on oat milk from 18 months when he weaned from breast milk but he had a very good diet and the allergy cons was happy with his weight etc

Coconut milk is not suitable.. plus isn't coconut a natural laxative?

Please get proper health advice from somebody before you start experimenting on your baby.

Obv if you're still breastfeeding it's fine to.use coconut milk as a complementary drink

You know coconut milk isn't actually milk, don't you? Its just called milk because it is white. You wouldn't give your young baby orange juice to nourish it, which is akin to coconut milk. You need to contact a health care professional and get proper advise.

The dietician is happy for my LO to go on coconut milk as soon as she turns 1.

Ppl need to calm down.

Op hasn't even said how old her child is, whether a dietician is involved or if she wants to use it as a main drink out just alongside formula/breast milk.

In my home country babies do have coconut milk. Its entirely normal although its as a drink alongside breastfeeding. Im not sure where you are OP - Im thinking perhaps you aren't, as you mentioned coconut milk - but if you are then Id be dubious about coconut milk if you're in the west/uk as it wouldn't be from the natural source. Id be worried about additives. If you are in a country where giving babies coconut milk is the norm then you'll know it doesn't cause harm so just decide if you want to introduce as an additional drink, or not.

I find realitys post quite insulting. OP is looking for a chat about coconut milk FFS.

I put my ds on goats milk at 1, but no allergies, no dietician, so o comparison. Sorry, not helpful!

We were recommended not to use coconut milk, I think because it isn't fortified. We have used oat milk since about 1.3 he is a much happier child ( eczema and tummy wise).

www.nhs.uk/ipgmedia/National/British%20Dietetic%20Association/assets/MilksforChildrenwithaCowsMilkAllergy.pdf - this suggests that dairy free milks arent suitable as a main drink under the age of 2 and that if not breastfeeding then an appropriate dairy free formula should be used until age 2.

Thanks everyone. I will speak to the peadetrician again, and get a second opinion.

ilove, that's really useful, but I can't see my fussy DD going on the hypo formula because of the taste.

I fail to see how my post is insulting, DoittooJulia. It was informative and directed the op to a health care professional.

Dietician put us onto oat milk at about 18 months old, then when we had problems moved onto almond milk. Said coconut milk wasn't calorific enough for under 5s and said to stay away from rice milk until 5 also.

Ach, reality, you're right. It's scathing, superior and treats OP like a dim wit. Not insulting at all.

OP what are you feeding your DD now? How long until she is 1 year old?

Report
atthestrokeoftwelve · 13/04/2014 07:47

Tanterose I see your baby is nearly three years old. There is no need to give any "milk" at all at this age. You can give water as a main drink, calcium can be found in many other non dairy foods, fish, meat, tofu, nuts and seeds, grean leafy vegetables.

DoItTooJulia · 13/04/2014 08:07

Am I missing something here? Where had TanteRose said anything about the age of her dc or sought milk advice for her own children? She asked OP a question.

Why, if someone asked about milk are they treated like an idiot who doesn't know anything?

Apologies, i misquoted.

No it doesn't. But it does give her information. And given the lack of info in her op , she didn't clarify how old her baby was. Bloody hell, you can't win with some people, you give clear info and you get accused of being superior, you give nothing of use and its ok.

Report
gamerchick · 13/04/2014 09:23

To be fair I was thinking tiny baby. I don't think there's need for any kind of milk after 1 Is there if other sources of calcium and whatnot are used instead?

Report
ilovepowerhoop · 13/04/2014 09:27

it is harder to get those sources of calcium though if you cannot have dairy/soya products which is why an appropriate non-dairy formula is normally used until age 2.
