Great idea! We haven't ventured out yet since the diagnosis but I've been told the steakhouse chains (beefeater, brewsters, harvester etc) provide clearly labelled menus stating allergens and are happy to answer questions. We've taken ds to most of the local restaurants for Sunday lunch but never a steak house so I can't confirm that!

We take a packed lunch and then ask lots of questions when we arrive in case there is something ds1 can eat (usually there isn't).

I live in NZ so I can't be specific - but I would recommend making friends with a local curry house if you have a dairy allergy. Some of their customers can't eat dairy for religious reasons and so they take any requests for food without dairy very seriously IME. My favourite is also a nut free environment and can make egg free, dairy free naan bread if given 24 hours notice.

I find it is worth mentioning to Macdonalds staff that you are "severely" allergic (even if you are not severe it makes them take notice) and get them to make you a fresh burger. I do this after getting a hamburger with a yellow bit that looked suspiciously like plastic cheese in it. The manager looked terrified when I pointed this out to him - I think he thought I was going to die at the counter.

Large hotels are also very good if you ring beforehand and ask to speak to the kitchen. I have had some wonderful conference food that everyone is jealous of. It makes a nice change from having to refuse everything.

The new Allergy UK magazine has an article about this. It says that Wagamamas, the Japanese chain, will cater for allergies. It says that there's a page on their website which tells you what you can eat from their menu depending on your allergy or intolerance. That's at www.wagamama.com. If you haven't been there it's fantastic - good food and cheap. The only thing is that it's very communal. You sit on long benches that go across the restaurant, so not really the place for a cosy chat.

It also talks about "El Piano" in York, but it doesn't sound like the kind of place that you'd take kids. Am also sure that I just read something about the chefs and staff at Centre Parks all knowing about allergies and being very helpful.

We normally just end up giving ds chips when we're out as it's the only thing we can be 100% sure of.

Even chips need to be checked. We got fish and chips one night and as dh was paying he saw a A4 sign "everything is cooked in groundnut oil". It was lucky he saw it as I would have happiliy let ds eat some chips off my plate. I wonder if I should suggest the shop makes a bigger and more noticeable sign?
