Has anyone known cashew nuts to cause vomiting?

Seems too much of a coincidence, dd2 violently sick on 2 occasions, both times after having very small amount of cashew nut butter.

No problems with other nuts. I also vaguely had it in my head that nut allergies in general affected breathing more than tummies.

my ds ia extremely allergic to cashews,it sounds like your dd is too.Be very careful as reactions can get worse each time.

wud have thought that the nut rule would apply with all nuts, ie. no nuts till over 36 months buta am open to contradiction. Personally I wouldn't give any type of nut or nut based product to a child under 36 mths.

my ds is allergic to tree nuts ,he was tested at 18 months after coming out in hives all over after being touched by me after I had touched cashews.He's never eaten any but his skin prick tests were quite dramatically positive and he was prescribed an epipen.He is due to go back in a few months to ascertain which nuts he is definately allergic to.He isn't allergic to peanuts(legume ) but is also allergic to eggs.
I would take your dd to gp and ask for referral to allergist.In the meantime I would avoid tree nuts and peanuts to be safe.

get her tested and ask if they can test for lupin and sesame while you are there. Nut allergies don't always affect breathing straight away, although most nut allergies are like that. Think you were very lucky that she vomited as it could have been a lot worse if it had got further into her system.

She's already had peanut butter and this has caused her no problems. Think I will seek out an allergist. Thanks for the advice. I'd still like to hear about other people's experiences too.

you need them to have a food twice before you can be sure it is safe. The first time they don't react because they have no antibodies. I have a nut allergic child and they do get symptoms in their mouth. However at 11 months a child can't tell you if their mouth is tingling and if you're lucky they can be sick before it gets any worse. I also know a child who collapses before their breathing is affected, don't think its just breathing you have to watch.

Hopefully your child will outgrow this but unless you want to end up in a&e don't give her any more nuts until you've had her tested. Carry liquid piriton with you in case she reacts to traces.

My dd is allergic to cashew nuts and no other kind of nut. When she had one firstaged 2 and a bit she developed red swellings in her armpits, around her lips and on her chest. I already knew she was OK with other kinds of nuts by that stage. Have never given her cashews again.

They make me throw up,but I hadn't considered myself allergic as no other symptoms.

usually if it's just digestive it's intolerance rather than allergy, doesn't involve IgE and it isn't anaphylactic. However with a baby the inside of their mouth could be starting to swell and if they vomited quickly it could subsidise again before their breathing became obviously laboured.

Tomorrow my most allergic child goes on a school trip for 3 days. You have to let go sometime, I know the risk is small, they are well trained and they'll have two epipens for emergencies. I'm still worrying myself sick - and wondering why anyone gives nut butters to a baby under 1.

You go through your gp, azroc, and you may have to nag at them to get a referral to an allergy cinic. I hope it's just an intolerance but don't even dream of giving them a nut until you've seen an allergy specialist or had skin prick tests.

Its perfectly possible to just have vomiting as a mild reaction.
as other posts have mentioned it could be intolerance, although a IGE reaction is not out of the question.
I would insist on going for allergy testing, as allergies do not stick to just on type of food.
your child may be allergic to all tree nuts or peanuts.
It is something that does need investigating.
Does your child or members of close family have any other aptopic diseases? asthma , hay fever ezcema?
As for first exposure and only second causing a reaction, please bear in mind that exposure through skin ( with ezcema) counts, and breastmilk and in utero.
So meantime, carry antihisamine with you at all times, and avoid all foods that may contain nuts or traces.
If you are having difficulty getting GP to refer you, ring the anaphylaxis campaign and they could tell you where your nearest allergy clinic is, and docs names. AllergyUK are helpful as well.

Azroc, ds1 sneezes, coughs, produces lots of mucous and eventually vomits with his confirmed allergic reactions (eggs and cashew nuts), so I'm afraid it does sound like an allergic reaction. Try to get a referral from your GP to an allergist/paediatric immunologist.

ggirl - sorry to hijack the thread but was interested to read your post. My ds1 is v allergic to cashew (19mm reaction) and the other week had a reaction to pistachio that slipped through the net as we'd been avoiding all nuts. His prick testing for peanuts was neg, so I'm wondering if he too is allergic to all 'tree nuts'. I hadn't considered them as a group before - will have to request this at the next testing. He is coincidentally also allergic to egg although this has subsided (4mm). What other tre nuts are there (forgive my ignorance).
