Hi,

My son has all of a sudden developed a nasty case of eczema, my doctor doesn't believe in dairy allergies, he thinks they are fashionable!

He is exclusively breastfed and 12 weeks old..... Is it possible that he could have a dairy allergy or would we have seen the eczema before then? He also has poo's which are entirely liquid (a bit thicker than water but not much, no seeds like I remember in my daughters) and really foul smelling wind.
Since cutting out dairy the wind has totally gone.
Does any of this sound like it could be a dairy allergy/intolerance? X

Hi, i think most babies only develop eczema after 3 months old, it's very rare before that age. my ds was ebf and his poo was liquidy and yellow until starting solids so i think that is probably normal unless there is any mucus or blood. You have done the right thing by cutting out dairy to see if it helps. it can take up to 3 weeks to be fully out of your system and another couple to be out of babies. You would need to cut everything containing any milk to be sure, also a lot of babies who are allergic to milk are also allergic to soya so may have to cut that too (sorry).

with regards to the eczema, don't use any soap with lo, use bath oil from gp (oilatum/hydromol) in bath water every day, apply emollients at every nappy change. if one emollient doesn't work try another, we found doublebase made things worse but cetraben worked well but its an individual thing. Also don't be scared of steroid creams and use them if you need to. Good luck x
