we are vegetarian and have just started to introduce meat and fish to our 10 mo DD. ok so far all she has had is fish fingers, then yesterday for lunch we gave her one of the hipp organic jars with chicken in it. she ate it fine but woke up in the night with a rash all down her back. it's the only thing that i've given her that's different, is it possible she is allergic?? she is also allergic to milk and i've yet to give her any egg :/ never heard of a chicken allergy before thoough!
yeah i was thinking that it sounds quite rare but you never know i guess! it's hard to determine if it was anything to do with milk powder as she has had other things with milk powder in and been fine. she tends to react straight away with anything milk based but this seemed to take quite a few hours to break in to a rash. the rash is still there but not as bad. i'm now wondering if it's just a massive coincidence and it's something completely different :/
It's worth having one around. We found that a number of things you'd never suspect of having chicken in did. Even some fish things once - the chicken must have been a filler, or to add taste, but my god did it give her a bad reaction.
For what it's worth, the consultant said that it would likely lead to issues digesting eggs, so she was limited to 2 eggs a week. It might be worth noting that for when you do introduce them.
i didn't really want to give her chicken, i only gave it to her as DP had a friend who raised their child vegan and when he did have meat at about 5 or 6 her had a really bad reaction to it and apparently it could have been avoided had he been given meat earlier. don't know how true it is but didn't want to risk DD ending up like that!
our allergy cons said a similar thing about nuts, i have yet to give her those as well cos i am a total wuss...

Eggs is included as something that may spark a mild reaction and should be limited.
Did your allergy consultant brief you on how to use epi-pens, and ways to relieve the rash? I'd be very careful about new foods. Sisters allergies started as rashes as a baby, but as she got older the reactions got more extreme until she'd have a full-blown fit, choking on tongue type reaction to some of her triggers. I would have been lost as to what to do if we hadn't had so much coaching in what to expect and how to react.
no we don't have an epi pen, i don't think any of her reactions have been bad enough to warrant one. i'm hoping to be able to see the allergy consultant again as i feel we need some kind of reassurance and i want solid diagnosis of her allergies.
I had heard that the sooner you introduce nuts the better. Guess its the same for other stuff. Well done though with the chicken, fish etc. can't have been easy. I'd recommend non processed food though (even if you are using organic). If you cook it yourself you know exactly what's in it.

ok - when I used to work in a farm we were told that eggs could NOT be labelled dairy free as some people had reactions to our eggs due to the high amount of Whey protein our chickens had in THEIR diet...
Chickens have traditionally long past been kept by the farmer's wife and were fed on the by products of cheese and butter production - hence they have a high amount of dairy in their diet - this makes people more sensitive to their proteins - and hence chicken and eggs CAN sometimes be considered if not a dairy product then at least NOT dairy free... this is where the confusion seems to come from - and is the root of why some people considered allergic to dairy are ALSO allergic to eggs... they may even react with some chicken and veal...
I seem to be allergic to chicken, always have been. When younger I was also allergic to milk/dairy, eggs and fish, ham/pork, plus feathers, pollen, cat and dog hair etc. I outgrew all but the chicken and fish allergies. I don't know why this is.
I was given allergy tests as a toddler which confirmed all allergies apart from the chicken/pork, which weren't tested for, I expect because they're rarer.
i still won't eat chicken now, my reaction is mild (cramping, pain, gut-rot type of symptoms), but I can feel off for 2 days or so after eating it. My fish allergy is different, it's more like hives/swelling typical allergy, and more severe.
My DD also has multiple allergies, but completely incompatible with mine. The only food she's ever tested negative to, on an allergy test, is fish. She's not been tested for chicken but seems able to eat it OK.
My mum still maintains that I'm making the chicken allergy up, in order to be difficult, and it's not possible to be allergic to chicken. I was made to eat it as a child , despite all the proven other allergies.
