Drunk DH left oven on and fell asleep

Fortunately I smelt something just as I was finishing reading and going to sleep and came down to find burnt food in the electric oven.

He could have killed us all, couldn't he?

Do you have a smoke detector in your kitchen?

Probably relatively unlikely with an electric oven. Judging by some of my sober efforts.

Is this a one off or a regular thing?

The smoke detector is in the hallway outside the kitchen because it kept going off when cooking.

He regularly drinks too much. He has now re-agreed not to cook after 9pm but he did similar c.5 year ago, so I've told him to put a smoke alarm up in the dining room/lounge (kitchen is open plan) too.

No he couldn't have killed you all with burnt food. I'd have been pissed off that he couldn't manage what he was doing and I'd had to step in, but it wasn't a matter of life and death.

The gp's IB the oven isn't so much of a problem as his drinking might be.

Ovens are designed not to catch fire. Foods inside will crisp and then blacken and char. They won't set on fire so in that respect you're safe (except the stink of smoke from the food, which again, would not be enough to kill)

The real issue here is the drunk DH. This time it was an oven, but next time it could be a grill pan or worse, a chip pan on the hob, both of which could and do sometimes set ablaze.

If he can't drink responsibly he should rethink drinking at all.
