Which LA / Adoption agency to choose?

I just wanted some advice about which LA or adoption agency to choose?

How do people know who to choose? Do they go on recommendations or do they do a few open days?

What kind of costs are involved for adoption agencies? What’s a volunteer agency?

Any advice would be appreciated?

I went with a local authority because I wanted a Young baby. The local authorities are responsible for placing the children, so they have access to younger children that voluntary agencies don't. Because of this, LA tend to be more difficult to register with, and will likely have a fuller list of prospective adopters. I also checked the ofstead reports for my local authorities which was lucky because one of the close ones were shockingly bad! Lastly, it's worth meeting with a couple of local options, LA and VA to see where you feel most comfortable. The adoption process is very intrusive into your private life so it's worth going with someone you feel comfortable with? Hope that helps!

I've done a lot of research into this and I've decided to go with a VA. The VA I'm going with is well funded and well resourced. They also offer more in terms of support (they do a course for friends and family to understand the needs of adopted children) and have support lines for up to when the child is 18. A friend who is a social worker said that I'd get better post support with a VA and I think she's right. I suppose it depends on the age of the child; if you want a baby, it is probably better to go with a LA, but remember a baby will still have additional needs (be it feutal alcohol / a mother who was abused, etc).

Voluntary agency, as opposed to LA (which stands for Local Authority)

Mind you, when we started out (about a year and a half ago) we just assumed everything was done by the county council and went straight to them..

Good luck
