Adoption

Considering adoption

We're having no luck getting pregnant with a 2nd child. DS is a toddler and I'd love him to have a sibling.
For the first time tonight I've wondered about adoption. I always said no and I don't really know why.

The first problem is our ages. DH and I are well into our 40s. Are we too old?

We have room for anther child in the house. They'd have their own room.

We both work though. I work part time and at home so school runs wouldn't be an issue with an older child. I also have a very flexible job so I hope that would help. Financially I do have to work and DS is in nursery 2 days a week.
Would an adopted child be able to go to nursery too? Or would I be expected not to work? I would make use of adoption leave to help with settling in

Any advice would be appreciated, or links to resources

Hi Sparklytrees, some of my thoughts as we are going through this and thought age would be against us. lts not.

It's more your health, robustness of your network and relationships plus a willingness to accept adoption into your lives.

They will want to know that you're coming to it not as a substitute for not conceiving a sibling as any child you bring into your house will have needs that you may not have considered and impacts you cannot imagine.

Working full or part time not an issue nor will finances to a certain extent (want to know you can afford the keep children comfortably off) as will depend on the needs of said child. Being flexible, open and honest will see you in good stead.

Look at your Local Authority's website, AdoptionUK and Coram for more information. Always worthwhile going to an information day/evening with your L.A.- No obligation to take it further than that. Good luck!

You could be us! We have one BC, and are currently in what is known as stage 1 of the process.

We are thinking of age around 5, to fit with our 11 y/o - who is likely to be 12 by the time it all goes through.

Be brave and give it a try :)

WRT to ages, most prospective adopters will be a similar age, given that people tend to try the conventional routes for a few years, IVF etc.
