Gift for friends and their new child?

My friends have had confirmation of adopting a toddler in a few weeks - I'm so excited for them! I'd like to crochet something for the child, or for them as a family, but don't know what would be suitable? I know from conversations with them preparing for this that I don't want to overwhelm them, or their new little one, but would still like to make something, if it's appropriate.

Any suggestions welcome!

One of my most treasured things is a beautiful family tree that was hand made and framed, it takes pride of place. The most useful and practical gifts I received were gift vouchers to be honest, it's hard to know what little one will come with (and the condition) and they change so quickly! My boy came to me in Dec just before his second birthday, his tastes and ability has changed a lot in such a short space of time as he is starting to catch up very quickly on some of his delays so the mothercare vouchers have been a god send as can also use for clarks shoes and early learning centre in some of the bigger stores/online. I've bought so many new and more age appropriate toys and clothes I would have struggled without them!

A memory book or box would also be nice if you want to make something, again very very useful (and much needed) but can be made very personal.

I've just booked in to have a professional family picture taken, in all the hoopla of the last couple of months and all the pics of him on my phone i don't have a good family shot and I want a lovely family pic to frame and keep next to the family tree.

A member of our family made a blanket, DS absolutely loves it, somehing like that which could be practical (we use it as a floor blanket at the moment) but also a nice keepsake too, perhaps with toddlers name on it?

A blanket that could double as a cape. Would be good.

Perhaps an extra-soft blanket big enough for the new parents to wrap round themselves (one at a time!) and the toddler, so they have something to snuggle in when having some skin-contact bonding time?
