If talking about Parental Leave then you can take upto 18 weeks in one week blocks - I believe though this is unpaid. www.gov.uk/parental-leave/entitlement there may be a better thing for you that is paid leave that either your employer does or is available as adoption leave which has to be taken in a block:www.gov.uk/adoption-pay-leave/leave

No, hubby is entitled to 2 weeks parental leave but works shifts so we need to know if it has to be taken as calendar weeks?

Possibly your husband's employer has not yet caught on to the changes in law around parental leave? The links PP posted are good for explaining.

But in general terms, the preference is for the leave to be in blocks rather than odd days - if it is paid paternity leave offered by the employer over and above legal entitlement, the employer should set out how it needs to be taken in their policy/employee handbook.

If this is the regular two weeks' paternity leave my understanding is it has to be all together, on placement of the child.

If you mean parental leave to be taken any time up to the child's 18th birthday, it's up to 4 weeks per year, and must be taken in blocks of a week.
