Our DS has been with us just over 2 years and he came to us at 18 months (so is 3.8 now).We have talked about that he hasn't always lived with us and that he grew in someone elses tummy but he has always pretty much ignored us when we've talked about it and turned away or tried to change the subject. We haven't pushed anything and have only talked about it when and appropriate situation has arisen.

He mentioned in passing about 3 days ago that he didn't grow in my tummy and then changed the subject. Last night we were talking about birthdays and when his friends birthdays were. The convo went like this:

Him: "why is Jacobs birthday in May"
Me: "because that's the day he was born"
Him: Long pause and then "what does born mean"
Me: "Born is when he came out of his Mummys tummy"
Him: "which Mummys tummy did i come from"
Me: "xxxx's"
Him " xxxx? What's xxxx like"
Me: "she is a little smaller than me and has long brown hair:
Him "like you?"
Me: "brown hair like me but hers is long"
Him "like daddy's?"
Me: "yes like Daddys"
Him: "what colour shirt does she wear"
Me: "well she'll probably wear a different colour everyday"
Him: "I don't like xxx. She's not my Mummy, just someone elses".
Me: "i am your Mummy and i'm so happy that you are my darling"
He then sat up on his knees, wrapped his arms around my and kissed me.

I feel weird. Happy that he has asked and that the dialogue has started but petrified that i'll say the wrong thing!!

It sounds like youi did brilliantly, well done

Its such a hard thing to talk about, but you didn't guide him in any way, just told him the facts. Sounds like he's made his own decisions!

Thats sounds perfect to me. You are talking the language he understands and he will always know now, over the years he will ask more questions but there will never be a really huge shock for him.
I knew the word adopted a long long time before I knew what it meant, then I learned more and my sisters likewise. I always felt special and it didn't matter that me, my sisters and for some (unknown reason to me) several other dc from school were different to others, we were special.
You sound lovely and what a wonderfully bright ds.
