I am due to start at glasgow uni in February (professional services role) and I was curious to know how long staff are expecting to continue WFH and if staff are expected to spend e.g. 1 day in the office?

I'm a bit nervous because I'm in the vulnerable category but I don't want to p*ss any of my new managers and employees off but asking about WFH so soon. I know it is likely to be WFH initially though.

Also, what's the chances of people being kept on beyond a 9 month contract there? I was told only funded for 9 months but I'm not sure if that was a hard no. What is the job security situation there with covid etc?

I work at Glasgow in an academic position and the default throughout this past year has been work from home. From September to December we were allowed to go into our offices but again the recommendation was to keep working from home. (At the same time, if someone wanted to work in their office, as was my case, they allowed it with basically no questions asked). I suppose senior management are looking to see how the situation progresses but my sense from the last year is that no one was rushed to go back to the office if they could work from home. I don't think professional services in my College was asked to go back into their offices unless perhaps for very specific tasks that couldn't be done remotely.
In my College (the smallest in the university so perhaps not very helpful) I've seen several instances throughout the year of professional services staff going through a number of short-term contracts before being made permanent. Many roles are recruited internally in the first instance. It is difficult to say re job situation - obviously I don't think the university is very keen to recruit in great numbers at this stage (like any other uni), but at the same time they have also created new positions, mostly in things like online learning support and the like.

@aridapricot thanks, so you don't think we'd be in before summer then? Given all these rumours of lockdown til summer anyway?

My new role is online learning related. That's positive about potential contract extension although they did say it was definitely fixed term Confused guess I'll need to wait and see but I'll continue job searching in the meantime too.

Can I ask about annual leave if people are not able to actually take it due to lockdown? are you made to take it or can it be paid instead?

And does the time between offer and start always take so long!
