Fix MacBook Pro 2013 or buy new MacBook Air

My 2013 MacBook Pro is struggling now. I use it for internet word excel and PowerPoint and teams. One drive etc. generally boring stuff.

I had some more memory added and a reinstall done three years ago by the IT tech at work as it ran out of memory and it's fine now but it is overheating and battery doesn't work.

I did some research and found that the MacBook Pro I have is the last of the one that can have extra memory added (I have no idea what I am talking about so may have this wrong but it was the last of something in some way!)

Can I do anything else to improve this MBP or should I buy a MacBook air and will this be good enough for what I use it for. Would I need the 256 or the 512?

Thanks

No advice on the Pro as I've never had one, but I've always found a MacBook Air adequate for Office type use. I'd go for the best spec you can afford if you decide to replace rather than repair.

So I’ve got a slightly older one that you (MacBook Pro 2010) and I upgraded it a while back with more memory and a SSD (yours probably already had that). If you can keep it going, maybe another refresh etc, it’s probably worth it as it’s a much better machine quality-wise than the air.

DS has a similar age MacBook Pro and last year it started slowing down and crashing unpredictable so we replaced the HDD with an SSD and it's like a new machine. Worth investigating that first before splashing out on a new Air.

Thanks everyone!

Did you do the repairs/upgrades
yourself or find someone to do it?

Im in a bit of backwater and most places don't do Mac repairs despite them being so popular Confused

I have the newest Air (M1) and it's worth it. No fan noise, very speedy. I have the 256 storage and unless you need storage for a lot of large files, it's fine.

If you have Amazon Prime, you will likely have the option to split the cost of the Air over 5 payments, which made it doable for me.

@MattDamon most as most files are now in cloud storage so reckon the 256 would be fine now.

I have the 265 (but the M1 Pro) and it's not even half full yet.

I'd say get the new Air - the M1 Macs are sickeningly fast - I've got an absolute base model M1 Pro (not one of the really new ones) and it points and laughs at my old Intel i5 Air.

Only thing you might miss (apart from the light up Apple logo on the lid that I am sooo jealous of) is that if you have a lot of stuff attached by USB you only get two USB-C ports on it so might want to just buy a basic USB-C to whatever attachments you need hub.

I may be found occasionally still telling mine how much I love it.
