Is anyone listening to the Sweet Bobby podcast?

SW1amp · 08/11/2021 16:23

It’s a new podcast and was recommended to me by several friends

It is a true story about a woman who gets catfished for TEN YEARS and is just absolutely insane, but also completely gripping.

Is anyone else listening? Would love people to discuss it with!

Or would anyone like to start listening..? Episodes 1&2 are out on Spotify, the podcast app etc, with the rest coming weekly

I can’t really get my head around her friends and family not taking her to one side and giving her a shake when she was claiming to be in a relationship with someone she had never met
Just bizarre that so many people seem to have gone along with it Confused

Yes I’m listening to it. Have just listened to The Confession. I can’t get my head around what the motive would be or how the catfisher would have to time to do those phone calls every night, pretend to be 50 off contacts and have a job/life etc (trying to avoid spoilers there!)

Yes. It's so creepy, so odd, really unsettling, the whole thing.

It’s baffling, isn’t it!
Getting through university, landing a demanding job and having enough of a functioning relationship to get engaged..!
Makes me feel bad for muting the family whatsapp group..!

Yes I’m listening, it’s a good one.

I can’t understand the motives of the catfish, but I also can’t understand how Kirat got so sucked in. There were so many red flags, in fact there were nothing but red flags from the very start.

If you’re enjoying this one you’ll probably also like The Missing Crypto Queen, Fake Heiress, Who the Hell is Hamish, and Chasing Charlie.

I've listened - curious as to how this is going to carry through another 3 episodes given the mystery of who it is, is over.

As for motive - I guess a crush, revenge, or just a calculated intellectual challenge as they sound without remorse

@BornIn78

I can sort of understand how she got sucked in. The explanation from the coercive control expert on dopermine etc, plus knowing many friends who were blind to the very obvious flaws and red flags in their relationships

But what I cannot begin to fathom is how her entire family and friendship group seem to have enabled this for a DECADE
At no point do they seem to have given her head a wobble or pointed out the facts
It is totally baffling

I know exactly what you are saying and it's definitely a mystery from the outside. But maybe something to do with the fact that he was from a respected profession and respectable family? It would be a good marriage? There were lots of people (apparently) in the community who were giving credence to the whole story? The whole witness protection programme thing would have made me very suspicious though, it's so far fetched.

The biggest mystery for me is why she didn't just go and see him in NY over those years. Or ask her cousin for a photo. Or ask him to turn his camera on, was that ever explained?

Just goes to show though, I think anyone could be duped if the perpetrator is clever enough, especially if we have some inherent vulnerability, which admittedly Kirat didn't seem to have but who knows.

I'm curious how it will stretch to 3 more episodes too. Thanks to all for the recommendations! I really enjoyed West Cork on Audible.

But she actually bumped into the real Bobby very early on, in a nightclub, and he clearly had no clue who she was but she even excused that away to herself. She behaved like a total dimwit.

The whole thing doesn’t add up and I’m not sure the podcast host has done a very good job of explaining the basics.

Like, didn’t she recognise ‘Bobby’s’ voice, why didn’t she ever see him, video call him etc? She sounds incredibly naive.

That sounds fascinating, these things always amaze me. I don't know if there is a podcast series but I remember it might have been Wine and Crime or maybe Lets Go To Court about Tall Hot Blonde, that story is bonkers.

Yes I don’t understand either as surely she would’ve know it was a female voice. Unless that’s explained in the next episode..

I’ve been listening to it. It’s absolutely bonkers. I’ve just finished the 4th episode which felt rather filler-ish. I agree with the poster who said the host hasn’t done a great job of explaining, but I think it’s complicated. I wonder if there’s a lot of cultural context that’s hard to explain if you haven’t grown up in this kind of tight knit community. She does seem unbelievably naive for a woman of her age. Also shame on the people who protected the catfisher! I’d be livid with injustice.

Thanks op for starting this post. I started it today (and have downloaded other posters recommendations too - thankyou)

I'm really enjoying it and trying to work out the psychology behind the main characters. I really feel sorry for Kirat.

I think she's been very naive and should have picked up on lots and lots of clues that this wasn't right, BUT, she had her head turned (romantic, same culture, potentially financially secure future, respectable) -the cat fisher went to extraordinary lengths to facilitate the lie, her family/her culture? may have played a role too.

She sounds as if she is humiliated but she's a victim of unbelievable deceit and I really hope she's had good counselling and a good support network in order to attempt to put it behind her.
I can't imagine what a mess her head must have been in.Sad

Just started listening, thanks for the share. On episode 2 while I cook tea. Has anyone listened to Hollywood Con Queen? Thats a really interesting story along similar lines. Well worth a listen.
