My job is completely different as advertised

I recently got a job that was supposed to be a simple office role and was advertised as such.

The interview was pretty much the same thing, I’ve been here two weeks and I’ve been pretty much given the last person who quits job. I have no experience with social media management but I’m expected to do it. I’m basically running a campaign alone, i didn’t apply for this. I’m a single mum so I really need the job. What the hell do I say?

Fake it til you make it I say!

What is it they want you to do? There are many free courses on digital marketing on future learn and similar which might help.

I'd tell them you hadn't realised the role was so social media heavy and feel you need some training.

Do you like it? If so, put your head down and learn, then in a few months ask for a pay rise.

It’s very new, and I’ve just been left to get on with it. I am faking it but I’m worried my lack of experience will ruin the whole thing.

I’ve only ever done non important roles and been heavily managed.

A lot of digital marketing is instinct. You can't always teach it so if you're enjoying it, just crack on with it. (Don't get me started about how digital marketing just gets shoved to the youngest/least able to say no employee - it's endemic and so shortsighted)

Check out canva, watch digital marketing vids on TikTok, track your engagement stats and best posts and work out some ideas for a brand tone, personality and voice.

If they are getting you doing ads or expecting big results talk about getting a freelancer in and for you to monitor activity and inboxes (which will keep costs down) and is more of an admin duty but you still get stretch and growth.

Good luck, enjoy and it could be the best thing ever!
