All my friends of a certain age want to run away from home

I thought it was just me, but after speaking to a bunch of friends around my age ( late 40s to early 50s) I have realised that all of us want to run away from home and fuck off to a desert island somewhere. We all have wildly different home lives, jobs and circumstances, but this is the common factor. Of course the pandemic has made things worse, but I don't think it's only the pandemic. Myself, I want to run away just to avoid being asked "Where is the sriracha?" when the sriracha is right on the counter.

A quick squirt right in the eye?

Can I come?

Single parenting a teenager (albeit a fabulous one), caring for elderly parents, working fulltime and the loss of my dad earlier this year...plus the onset of perimenopause...

Fuck it all sideways and send me to Barbados!

When you find your island, you should call it Sriracha, OP Smile

‘Wife work’ and the ‘mental load’ are probably the reason most women want to run away. I always joke that I’d love to have a wife…

I'm 63: I did run away when I was 49 - full time runaway from XDH, half time runway from the bloody teenagers. No desert islands available, sadly, but it was great.

I was thinking this morning Oo maybe I could ask my old friend who owns a huge house near the beach if I could come back and live in his amazing houseshare that I lived in ten years ago. . . Then I remembered I have two young dc and it wouldn't work!

When I win Euromillions I'm opening a Mumsnet Escape Hotel for everyone who wants to run away for a break.

I want to run away everytime DS3 tells me off for pronouncing sriracha wrong, apparently the first "r" is silent Hmm
Anyone else feel jealous when dropping offspring of at uni? DS2s fully catered, empty little room near the library seemed very attractive to me...

It's the only good thing about being divorced. Every other weekend my own metaphorical ldesert island is created in my house. I used to miss the kids like mad that weekend. Now they are teenagers and one is going through something of a phase, I actually really look forward to them Blush. (I still kind of miss them but I do appreciate the break)

Also that temptation when you fill the car up and see that you have 500+miles range...
Anne Tyler wrote a book about a woman just walking away one day, i think it's called "The Ladder of Years", I read it a few years ago...

I 'ran away' in my 40s, did have DC in tow though and I fully intend on doing it again in my 60s too!!! Ran away to live abroad that is!

I don't want to run away.
I did want to (and in fact did for a few days, but I was in such a state I don't actually know where exactly I went), but it's in the past now.

It's just me and DS2 at home, with DS1 at uni. DS2 doesn't have a relationship with his Dad so I don't get any true down time.
It's taken a long time to get to this stage. I'm happy and in charge of my life. Hoorah. It's hard, but it's hard on my terms.

For Sriracha substitute any household item: sugar, ketchup, coffee...I only said Sriracha because DS loves it, but apparently has some kind of brain defect where he can't find anything on his own🙄
Peri-menopause is not helping. Find myself constantly irritated by everyone and everything. No doubt DH feels exactly the same...

Me too, same demographic. We are actively plotting going off travelling for months on end, can't go until at least dc graduate (4 years) but dreaming is fun

I wanted to run away but the feeling passed after a couple of years and HRT. Me and DH used to talk about divorced couples sharing parenting and the free time each parent must enjoy on alternate weekends. We started to create that space within our marriage and now I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. Still think the HRT done the heavy lifting….

I often fantasise about running away. You aren't alone OP.
