I booked something via TopCashback and it was cancelled but they paid the bonus regardless. £40. I reckon that's the luckiest I've been. Confused

You?

I won £50, three weeks in a row on the lottery a few years ago, before they changed it and put the price up etc. Hasn't happened since, I only ever win (un)lucky dips for the next draw now.

I fell down the stairs!

I fell down the stairs and cut my toe very badly and couldn’t go to work the next day, so I was at home, the house phone rang and it was from a training centre, offering me a place on a course starting straight away. They were ringing around everyone that morning and by pure chance I was there to take the call, I took a place in the course, and it changed the whole course of my life. I’m extremely lucky!

I booked a home delivery slot with Sainsburys for £71
Got a phonecall on the day to say the driver has tested positive for Covid and I would have to come pick it up, which I did.
Next day the whole amount of the shop was refunded to me.

A few lucky things (although definitely not due to just luck, but very lucky nonetheless:

  • a few years ago I was given a 3 bedroom council house with a garden in a nice area with great neighbours. Most houses in my road are bought and it sometimes feels like winning the lottery

  • I was awarded nearly £20k as a scholarship

  • I was in the same place at the same time the London bombings went off but the day before

Obviously the London bombings incident was pure luck!

Someone made an admin error with the salary in an offer letter - they honoured it! It was only a couple of quid an hour but still.

My first round of IVF worked. Still can’t believe my luck at 26 weeks pregnant.

I withdrew £800 changed it to dollars then went for lunch with my friend to talk about our impending holiday. I left the envelope on the table and somebody handed it in. I was so thankful and couldn't believe my luck.

My parents were burgled shortly before I got married and one of the things that was stolen was my jewellery box which I'd taken there from my house to be ready for the wedding. There was nothing particularly expensive in it but quite a few things of sentimental value, most significantly a ring my great aunt had given me a few weeks before she died.
About 3 years later my Dad had sprayed their drive with weed killer to get rid of moss that had grown between the paving stones. Once the moss had died, my Mum saw something glinting in the sunlight and found it to be my great aunt's ring, wedged between two paving stones on its edge. How tiny must the chances of that happening be?

Had the Viva for my Ph.d. then we went to the pub afterwards to celebrate. I could not really have much to drink as I had a job interview in the afternoon. Had tried to alter it but not possible.

At the interview one of the academics was rude and argumentative. Spurred on bya couple of vodkas I argued back pretty hard. I decided I was probably not going to get the job anyway, so what the hell. Got a taxi back to the pub and got smashed. We then went for an Indian meal in the evening.

When I got home there was a message on my voice mail offering me the job!

I phoned up next day and accepted. Told the prof I would be working with that I was surprised at the offer as her colleague prof W had been quite aggressive and I was probably a bit rude back. She laughed.

"Well he was like that with all the applicants. Its his way. But we were quite impressed at the way you had come straight from your viva and then defended your corner so that was part of the reason we appointed you."

I didnt tell her I had come straight from the pub until much later.

Being born in the late 70s. If I had been born earlier I wouldn't have received the life saving open heart surgery I had as a child & so would not have survived past early teens. I am mid forties & very often reflect in how lucky I have been, along with many others.

Meeting DP was serendipity, I shouldn't have been working at the same place as him but took the job anyway, and the rest is history.

Getting pregnant with my son, turns out I am largely infertile and he was my miracle. I am thankful for him every day.

Someone abandoned a puppy and he ended up in a shelter at 12 weeks old. Of course he was snatched up right away but for whatever reason they changed their minds at the last minute and he's been with me now for the last 7yrs.

Playing in a hay barn as a kid, right at the top running over the bales, at least two stories up. Something possessed me to do a flying leap as I ran, and it was lucky I did as I would have fallen god knows how many feet down to the concrete floor otherwise - there was a big gap between the stacks. Thankfully I was able to tell my younger brother not to follow but I think about that day a lot, I would've broken both of my legs at least if I'd fallen but pure luck meant I was totally fine!

I was a very skint single mum. Me and my son had very little to live on, no luxuries etc. One day we were coming out of Asda and I found £1. For whatever reason I still don't know I decided to buy a scratchcard with that pound and was delighted when I won £32! We had a slap up meal that night Smile

I withdrew £500 from the bank and put it in my inner coat pocket, when I’d normally put it in my handbag, but I couldn’t that day because my handbag was wet from the rain and I thought it would be better in my coat. I got mugged on the way home and they stole my handbag…. So not lucky at all in that way but lucky they didn’t get the £500!

In the summer, I was made redundant. I applied for an apprenticeship at a well known charity and got on so well at the interview, they asked me to apply for a previously internal vacancy at twice the salary plus car. I was successful and started 4 weeks after my last day at my previous job.

I'm loving it and still can't quite believe how it's all turned out!

Happening to notice a job ad here on MN a few years ago, dashing off an application despite the fact that it was for something I had no experience in, and getting my job that I like and am good at.

I'd only ever had waitress / shop type work and never, ever thought I'd have a job I enjoyed. The salary is not huge at all, but is above min wage and I was able to get a mortgage, buy a house and never have to deal with my dickhead landlord again 🥳

I feel lucky all the time I happened to go on MN that day!
