I hate fancy dress, as I always seem to be over or under dressed compared to everyone else. How people know how "out there" to be is a real mystery to me.

I'd go as Bill Bryson's "At Home", and just not turn up....

More helpfully though, you could be the girl with a pearl earring?

Tempting… but maybe not Grin

Draw a dragon on your arm with felt tip and go as "the girl with the dragon tattoo".

I'd just dress in black and buy a great big lairy fake Pearl earring from some cheap shop and stick that in, with hair clipped to one side so that it's easily visible.

Dress as you'd like, and if asked say that you are 'The subtle art of not giving a f**k'

If you have any maternity clothes available you could go as Great Expectations.

I’m happy for it to be a bit out there… years ago I went to a party where the theme was dress up as a song and I’m still kicking myself for not going as I am the Walrus!

Get your oldest clothes on and snip little holes all over and go as the book Holes

Can you somehow go as A Tale of Two Cities? I'm thinking one of those I heart NY t-shirts and some sort of..... Big Ben print trousers. Maybe my idea needs some work.

@Toastytoads

I'd go as the hungry caterpillar

Yes but… how? I mean what would you actually wear?

Wear your pyjamas and a facemask and be the English Patient. If you're English that is, if not you might have to accessorise with a cup of tea or something.

How much effort are you willing to go to?

You could be The Girl On The Train, and make carboard cut out if a train carriage it something.

The old man and the sea: dress up as an 'old man' take some cardboard waves...

The Grapes of Wrath... Balloons and angry faces...

War and peace: dress in a camouflage t-shirt and decorate with peace symbols ☮️🕊️🏳️✌️

Do you want to buy a costume or can you cobble one together from items at home?

Off the top of my head Harry Potter, where's Wally, the hunger games would all be easy
