Do you take time off for "just a cold".

Sore scratchy swollen throat, pressure in my nose, sore eyes, cough, sneezing, streaming nose. Been awake over an hour. DC1 also has it and feeling very sorry for himself, started school last week and is just so tired. Dc2 has been coughing in the night.

We could all do with a day or 2 off but its "just a cold". I can WFH but pretty sure work won't be happy (recently upped our days back in the office)

If it was just me I'd just 'soldier on'. But poor dc1 is suffering. It seems all his class are too.

It sounds like you have the same plague as us! Take the day off tomorrow and keep the DCs off school.
Sofa, tv and blankets is definitely needed.

Feel better soon xx

Thank you. Unless a miracle happens in the next 2 hours I think me and dc1 will definitely be off.

Get a pcr test and work from home. Wrap kids up on the sofa

If dc2 has been coughing they need a test aswell.

We've had the same thing here. A particularly nasty cold but still a cold. I took yesterday to work from home as I couldn't face going in. I'm lucky I'm able to do that.
It's strange now as it seems we as a nation are only allowed to be I'll if it's Covid!
I've taken lfts just to be sure but it's a cold, feels like a cold.

  1. This could be a cold, it could be covid (unless you've already had it recently, or already tested?)
  2. you should stay off to avoid spreading it as others may have to test if they catch it
  3. yes I take time off when ill, it helps speed recovery

If you have symptoms like that our school wouldn't let you over the threshold!

Definitely stay at home.

Daughter started school last week and at the weekend came down with such a heavy cold and not eating. On Monday morning she was just so full of cold; sneezing, snore throat, streaming eyes etc… and extremely tired. I’ve kept her off school and won’t be going in today either. She would have just been so miserable going in.
A few days home, wrapped up and resting.

When you’re ill, it’s best to stay off work and school and get better I feel.

Hope you all feel better soon.

Colleagues have both had this awful cold. Seems so much worse than normal!

They both stayed at home and kept an eye on emails but rested up. Stayed away from the office so they didn't spread it to the rest of us.

🤞🏼it seems to have worked!

It's going to be a long winter, but with that much sneezing & coughing, you should all get a PCR test (don't rely on LFT with symptoms) and other than that, stay home. Work might not be impressed but they're going to have to get used to it!!

Hope you all feel better soon!

it all depends with me , if i feel up to going in i go in , if i feel deathly ill with it and aching and shivering which i frequently get with a cold i dont , everybody suffers /copes with them differently . my colds often turn into chest infections needing antibiotics and theres not a chance i can go in then as im normally coughing for england .
it may be just a cold , but trust me no one you work with thanks you for coming in and infecting them with it , its only the managment that want you in is my experiance , everyone else is avoiding you like the plague

I'm assuming that you have all had negative PCR tests, as otherwise you should be isolating and only leaving the house to go to a test centre.

If you have got your test results back, then it's probably worth working from home for a day or two to give the children time to recover properly. Apart from anything else, it is a lot more antisocial these days to spread even minor illnesses that would require other people to self isolate and miss important events.

Yes. Assuming you've ruled out Covid, it's still annoying when someone comes into work and spreads their bugs around!

Stay home and get well soon.

These days I’d WFH, no-one in the office wants my germs, or the hassle of having to get their family PCR tested when they all develop my cough (I assume you’ve all been PCR tested and you know this isn’t COVID). I’d only take a day off work if I genuinely felt too rotten to function - if I felt crap but not bed-ridden, I might let my boss know and ask if I can do the minimum for the day (monitor emails for urgent issues, do enough to keep things ticking over but otherwise rest).

Nope. Not possible in my job You take nurofen and you get on with it
( having ruled out covid obvs)

I've started taking time off for colds in the last couple of years - I've realised that if I don't shrug it off in the first few days, then it gets much worse and I end up with a bad cold for a fortnight and a full week off work to recover. So now I tend to take a day or two in the early stages of a cold and really try to rest / recover / look after myself, to stop it getting much worse. But that's just me and will be related to my own health situation. Funnily enough, it took a long-standing boss to point this out to me (by looking back at my sickness records), I didn't work it out myself Smile

We’re in exactly the same boat. It feels relentless.

Not all colds are equal - there are loads of different viruses and some colds can be more severe, others less so. They still make you feel like utter crap, so there’s nothing wrong with taking a day or two off if you or the kids need it. It’s completely reasonable.

If a cold is severe and you’re coughing and spluttering to the extent it that colleagues/clients might feel uncomfortable and your performance would be affected, I’d definitely take a day off.

It’s definitely going round. My son is the same. Just had a negative pcr so back to school but he sounds awful bless him.

You have my utter sympathy we have all had it ( negative PCR ) it's a really rotten nasty cold this one! I'm day 7 today and feeling much more human now! Stay home and rest

Presumably you've done a PCR? When I had Covid I had classic cold symptoms, blocked nose and sneezing. I wouldn't go into work until I'd had PCR results.

Report
Peeceandquite · 15/09/2021 07:48

We're in similar situation, DC gone for PCR and me wfh. Probably just a cold but he is coughing so better safe than sorry. School won't want him in coughing anyway
