Settle final invoice for builder before or after snagging?

Just after opinions please. Would you settle a final invoice from a builder before or after the snagging has been completed? Only a few little bits to do, touching up of paintwork etc but will be delayed by about 10 days as a replacement appliance needs to be ordered. Builder asking for final settlement now, husband thinks we should hold back 10%, I have no idea! The original quote says final invoice to be settled on completion of works.

I’ve always settled after snagging.

You have your answer in the original quote. Final invoice to be settled on completion of works.
The work is not completed until the snagging is done. I agree that you should keep 10% back until snagging is done.

Of course he’ll get stroppy. But once you have settled he has no incentive to make time to finish the snagging.

I am in Scotland, not sure of that makes a difference, but our contract was written that we held back the 10% until all snagging done; snagging to be done within 12 months of building completion.
It’s also a thing here that some builders may walk away from some or all of the 10% to let you hire your own tradesmen for snagging - in our case we needed a leak fixed and builder couldn’t trace it so we paid that money to a plumber instead .

It's normal to hold back 10% until after snagging. Although in our case that still didn't seem to provide enough of an incentive for them to come back and sort out the last few bits. It took months!

After. Never pay until you're 100% happy with all the work done.

Thanks everyone seems DH is right, will risk offending the builder and hold back 10%

We didn’t hold back 10%. It then took 5 years to get the snags finished!

If he gets stroppy, let him, you will make sure you get the snags fixed, that way OP.

Anyone else keep reading “snag/snagging” as “shag/shagging”?

No? Just me?

Came back to this thread to read subsequent posts...
Just to clarify, I haven't shagged the builder, either before or after final payment, and neither do I intend to🤣🤣🤣
