Houses in books....where do you want to live ?

Just reading the thread about homes and somebody mentioned no food smells in the kitchen.
This made me think of Penelope Keeling's house in The Shellseekers.
She has a huge basement kitchen with French doors into the garden, there is a scrubbed pine table with a jug of flowers on it and a delicious smell of garlic and herbs. She has shelves full of books and lots of records and silk indian throws on the sofa and omg! I want to live there!

Which fictional house do you want to live in?

The cottage that the family live in in Cider With Rosie by Laurie Lee. The cottage takes on the characteristics of each season as it comes round and is almost part of the natural world surrounding it.

Lol, sorry, I know it's not actually fiction 🤦‍♀️

Definitely Pemberley. I’m convinced that’s why Lizzie changed her mind and agreed to marry Darcy. Or Manderlay before the fire and without the creepy servants.

I always liked the home alone house when I was younger. Not a book though.
Hercule Poirot’s Art Deco flat sounds good.

Any house in a Milly Johnson book. The way she describes it is always so cosy.

I'd love to lie in the Magic Faraway tree. In Moonface's house with the slippery-slip.

@mybrainhertz could you cope with the flooding though? The sudden panic and the frantic sweeping away of the water!

I want to live in Green Knowe. Or Alfie's house in the Shirley Hughes books.

Manderley

Or Shell Cottage in Harry Potter.

@WhoisRebecca completely agree about Lizzie. People I have spoken to about it always say that she came to realise that she loved him and saw his kind attention to the family and servants who lived there but I personally think she saw the house and thought 'ooh, this isn't too shabby, I get to be the mistress of this and get away from my awful mother!'.

Oooh shell cottage! Good one! The Burrow would be nice too....i'd live Molly's special clock in my kitchen.

The house that Tom and Lucy live in looks fab too...especially at Christmas.

Bag End. Though I’d have to shrink a bit.
Or The OverLook Hotel. Grin
(this is a bit outing if anyone knows me, but I live in an old house and I actually have one bathroom that is original and it’s the same jade green bath and sinks as in the film - no creepy dead old lady thoughGrin)

Oh heck, I forgot about the flooding. I read it at school, so I think I've only retained the more romantic aspects of it 😄

Stonehaven in Kelley Armstrong's Otherworld series always sounded lovely to me, especially with the meal delivery service also described Grin.

Brideshead Castle, with its glorious painted rooms, especially the Chinese room, and the grounds and situation sound beautiful too.

Another vote for Trennels - love the Marlow stories!

Capeside (Dawson's Creek). I love Dawson's house right on the Creek (Gram's house would do fine too).

I quite fancy living in the place the gilmore girls live ....but suspect it would drive me mad

Another vote for Manderley. I imagine it on the Cornish coast with blood-red rhododendrons towering overhead as you approach at sunset.

Beckfoot, forever! To be on right on the lake, in the foothills of the mountain...
