Hip pain- bursitis?

Wondering if anyone has any advice- I'm on the cusp of booking a docs appointment but I'm very conscious of the pressures on the system currently and don't want to be a pain.

Anyway, I'm 45 and I'm experiencing really bad hip pain. Always on the left side and much worse in the evening/at night- though increasingly it's bad during the day too. It hurts when I lie down on either side, when I stand up out of a chair, when I bend over to pick something up and sometimes just when I'm simply walking along. The pain is completely debilitating- when it strikes I can't move until it eases a bit. It's a sharp, intense pain.
I've googled and bursitis looks likely- although I'm not sporty at all! I am on my feet a lot at work.
Any advice, suggestions or experience of similar things welcome. I've been grinning and bearing it so far but I don't think I can for much longer.

See your gp. You need to find out what’s causing it. I have lupus and have a lot of hip pain and bursitis. If it is that you’ll need anti inflammatory medication and / or steroids and possibly an X-ray to make sure there isn’t a small fracture anywhere.

Thanks for the reply. I think I needed to hear that my GP won't be irritated at me making an appointment at the moment. I'll book one tomorrow. It's really starting to get me down to be honest.

I've had it for 3 years now - I was sporty when I got it. Exercise and stretching made it worse, clams are particularly evil. I try to strengthen the muscles around it to stabilise. a hip belt helped and a massage gun is good too - expensive but really helps. Don't lie on it. I still have to restrict exercise but can walk and do minor activities and it doesn't hurt at night so much anymore

Sorry to hear that. I started to experience the same thing about five years ago. I went to the GP who diagnosed bursitis. I was prescribed an ibuprofen type gel and was under the impression it would be a temporary problem. I do still have problems with it though, especially in cold damp weather, and especially if I lie on it at night. The pain is no worse than it was when it started, but it’s still a problem so I should probably go back to my GP in case it isn’t bursitis after all.
I have no advice, no words or wisdom, but please do get a diagnosis. It’s a painful problem to have.

I was diagnosed with arthritis and bursitis and the bursitis was awful, it felt like such an awful stabbing pain on the outside of my hips. I was offered a steroid injection directly into it to help with the symptoms, but I freaked out wanted to think about it and then a month later the pain was gone on its own. I'm not sporty at all either.

Definitely speak to your GP! Ours have been brilliant recently, doing really detailed phone consultations and calling you in if they need to see you. I've had a few appointments for various reasons and it's been no problem at all.

I got diagnosed with trochanteric?? bursitis a few years ago after I got shitfaced and fell over on the dance floor injured myself. GP referred me for physio which helped a lot. Definitely get the appointment.

Start the ball rolling with your gp. My needle sharp pain when walking and soreness at night was caused by a bone spur/calcified labrum/osteoarthritis combo. My gp sent me off for physio, then a steroid injection etc. It ultimately resulted in a total hip replacement. I was 46. It took two years from initial visit to surgery last October.
