Aargh I got scammed! So cross with myself!!

Had loads of weird calls from mobile numbers similar to mine and I knew I’d be at risk but then I saw a message from dpd saying I’d missed a delivery (which I was waiting for) while I was on a zoom call then rushed through the website link. I put my credit card info in and hope to god I didn’t put in my bank info.

Then it linked my to dpd U.K. and I thought NO!! Omg!! I’m not in the U.K.!!

I stopped the card immediately and called my U.K. bank as it was my U.K. credit card but I’m now a bit worried about my bank account and my mobile number. That they’ll have “marked me”

Any advice, similar experiences l, rage against criminals n internet providers that don’t stop this or just plain old sympathy for my stupidity v v welcome!!

I haven’t lost any... yet but they have my name mobile number date of birth etc and my now cancelled credit card

They asked for my account number n sort code too but I am pretty sure I didn’t put that in

You have said you are not in the UK, has whatever you are waiting for been despatched by dpd from the UK? If so, that could explain the link to dpd UK? Presumably you were being asked to pay customs duties and tax on the delivery?

Not sure what to say about the calls from mobile numbers similar to yours, that does seem odd.

This is a really awful scam. My DM had multiple calls from a strange number and she noticed immediately that it was exactly the same number as hers except for the last three digits. She ignored the calls and they seem to have stopped.

Despite knowing this, the other day I had exactly the same thing happen. My number calling me with the last three digits different. The problem was, I was expecting a deliveroo-type delivery any minute so was expecting a strange mobile to call and I very, very nearly picked up

If you're really worried, contact your bank (i.e. the one with the bank details you're worried about whether you gave or not), and if there's a non emergency police line, report the scam and what info you gave. Hopefully they'll give you a crime reference that you can use if anything does happen/money stolen/credit taken out in your name down the line.

Keep a very very close eye on your credit report for the foreseeable!

I’ve had the DPD scam several times and it’s always when I’ve actually ordered something. I’m starting to wonder how these scammers know I have ordered things? Have the companies I’ve ordered from been hacked or are selling my info?

It's a common scam. Also runs as a royal mail one or someone using your bank card in a new place at a weird time. These always come from a private number which no big companies would do.

The guy from my bank said it’s really common so I guess I wanted to raise awareness too!

I suppose everyone has something they are waiting for now!

Dpd is here (I think) but it would be dpd uk . only in the uk if you see what I mean

Also they won’t provide information- it’s a real disgrace that it could be reduced but isn’t, because of corporate greed.

I understand now, OP, yes they are bastards. Hope you were quick enough to stop any serious damage but what a nightmare for you.

I too wonder where the information leakage regarding deliveries is coming from, it cant just be a random guess, they must have some form of inside knowledge.

I am intrigued by this calling you with a number very close to your own, is that to see if your number is active/does belong to you?

If I remember right, this particular scam involves another phone call from your 'bank's fraud department'. Just be on your guard for it.

Just yesterday the bank contacted my mother about numerous small (under £40) transactions. Turns out her card details had been copied and used totalling over £500.

After questioning her about how this could have happened it turns out that she paid a £1.50 re-delivery fee to 'Hermes' for a delivery she was expecting. So the bastard criminals had all her card details to go on a contact less spending spree.

The bank are currently investigating and 'hope' to be able to refund the money.

Was it a text that said it was from dpd?

If so the phone companies in the UK anyway can't stop it because of the way the technology works (there was a programme on the radio about it recently). Eventually when the system is upgraded number spoofing can be stopped but not now

Simplest to assume all messages about deliveries are scams unless it's just an update on where your parcel is.

Can they clone a card without actually ever having it? That is a bit scarey, most people input their details into so many online buying sites nowadays but I'd have assumed they actually needed the card to do contactless transactions. Did any of the shops have CCTV?

@BronwenFrideswide I get them all the time, and most of the time I'm not expecting a delivery.

They just send them en masse and hope that some of the recipients will be waiting for a parcel, and will believe the message.

The phone number thing is not usually the same scam, it's just a new spam call thing. They use numbers that are a digit or two away from your own, as it makes you mentally recognize the number, so you're more likely to answer it.

Yup and I knew about it too as a way criminals test the number

Say your number is 07777 123 456

You’ll get calls from 07777 123 xxx and if you pick up the line goes dead and if you ring back it’s someone who says they never called you or the number is out of use

I’d had about 10-12 I knew I was at risk and I still put my details in 😤

Unfortunately I don't know the details of the transactions, I just assumed they were contactless purchases, although mum said the bank told her one transaction was for a taxi ride in London, and she's 100s of miles away. Perhaps it was all online.

This is an example of the text you might get.

I've had loads of them with various "senders" - so annoying.

You can report them to 7726 - just forward the text to that number and they will ask for the mobile number. Every little helps!

Yes I will now. I guess I thought I’ll put it on mumsnet as I haven’t seen a post about this problem for a while and it might save someone else from making my mistake.

Hopefully as phone systems evolve they can address this and the scammers can find another way to do their worst

Thinking about it I’ve had some calls from official looking numbers that I haven’t bothered to answer maybe they were from my banks “fraud department” 😖

Yes this happened to my friend last month, they called from the “bank” afterwards to say the dpd link was a fraud (which it is) and told him they were investigating it and that he should move his savings into the current account so they could prevent any unauthorised access to linked accounts or some such crap. They also tried to convince him that moving any money out of the account could potentially give the scammers access to the other accounts he held.

Up until this point he was convinced it sounded legit, it’s a much more elaborate scam than the old fashioned Nigerian Prince ones at least!

I’ve had the Royal Mail one this month, they do seem to have some way of knowing when you’re actually expecting something from RM/DPD which is an unpleasant thought.
