Paul Nicholls - I'm so sad for him.

Posting on AIBU for traffic.

I saw a picture of Paul Nicholls the actor in the paper recently and I've never felt so heart broken for a celebrity before.

As an actor he is 'hit and miss' for me.
I liked him in Earthfast and The Biz when I was a kid and he was a kid.
Found him a bit irritating in EastEnders but I guess that was his character.
Didn't like him at all in most of what he has done to be honest.

However, seeing him in his recent pictures looking so thin and frail almost made me cry.

People were commenting on him being a drink and drugs fiend, no sympathy for him at all.

He's been in showbiz since he was 10 years old or something, he's probably never had any real friends. A few years ago the press were full of praise for him, women drooling all over him.

Now when he seems to have lost the battle to drink or drugs or is recovering from them as well as his horrific accident in Thailand, he has become an object of ridicule :(

I bet he had lots of 'friends' when he had money and acting work. Wonder where all those people are now?!

The woman he is with is being called all sorts of names for being with him, like he doesn't deserve somebody to love him.

The acting industry and the BBC / EastEnders have failed this guy. Yes, he has a responsibility for his own actions, but when you've been hooked on substances from a young age it must be hell to break away from.

It makes me sick that people like him are splattered all over posters and TV but once they are on the decline nothing is ever done to help them.

PN has lost his looks, his nose looks like it has collapsed, he'll never get the TV work he once did and now he isn't even allowed to live a peaceful life with a woman!

I hate the gutter press.

It's kind of weird to know so much and care so much about someone who has no bearing on your life

If everyone felt like this the world would be a sad place.

I donate to a food bank, is it weird that I care so much for people who have no bearing on my life?

I thought you meant the chap in just good friends.

Not really relevant to the thread but there you go.

Having read your post properly. I do think that child stars and especially if they carry on in the business deserve a medal if they don't go off the rails. It seems to be something that totally damages people.

He nearly died after falling down a waterfall and waited days to be rescued..that must have been awful.

@User5768
That's not even remotely the same thing. Food banks have a bearing on your life because there is something you can do to support them. To care about a celebrity who you don't even think was very good at what they were famous for and you can do nothing to help is just a waste of energy and headspace

Op - I hear ya.
Not nice to see someone suffering, even if we don’t know them in real life

According to the papers, his friend offered him a place to stay, and he had an affair with the guy’s girlfriend. They’ve now split up anyway.

I used to be obsessed with him when he was younger, I don’t actually think he’s the best actor but there was just something about him and I was young. I watched him in Ackley Bridge and thought he still looked great and then I googled him recently out of curiosity and was really surprised but the newspaper said he had not lost his looks but he looked like a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders and very thin. It’s really sad and he’s still young so can turn it around.

Yes, I do care about this person or anyone that is left to rot when they are no longer useful.

I didn't like his adult acting but I loved his shows when he was a kid and I was a kid. I had a happy childhood and whenever I saw him on TV, he reminded me of my childhood, as he was on the TV from ages 10 to 16 - I think he and I are the same age.

If that makes me weird, then I am.

Do you have access to photos of him none of the rest of us can see? He looks fine to me apart from skinny. Also why do you need to post in AIBU ‘for traffic’, genuine question? It’s not very important news that everyone needs to be made aware of

I was expecting to see worse, he's not unrecognisable in this pic at least. Always liked him when he was in Eastenders etc but the celeb life/circuit can be so brutal

I think you are a very caring person to have written this, yes, it is a shame to see someone fall on hard times, especially after being in the spot light. Certain papers love posting articles and photos of famous people who have not done so well recently, I'm so glad I'm not famous, it would be so hurtful and soul destroying to have your life and looks picked over my people you don't even know. The snidey comments on Lisa Armstrong's (ex Ant McPartlin) appearance was bloody cruel

YANBU, OP. It is sad, and the way the tabloids revel in this sort of thing is horrible.

I had a massive crush on him about 30 years ago. Saw the picture and felt sad for him, he doesn't look in great shape but that could be due to the accident he had.

cheeseybean · 23/02/2021 20:43

Looked him up and it showed some fat old fella that races horses!

ChristOnAPeloton · 23/02/2021 20:48

Is there a recent news article that’s inspired this?

I remember his accident, but that has nothing to do with the BBC. I haven’t seen anything recently about him- negative or otherwise. And I freely admit to reading the DM’s sidebar of shame.

You’re not confusing him with Jonathan Rhys-Meyers are you? I could well imagine your OP being written about him.

Roominmyhouse · 23/02/2021 20:48

I had so many posters of him on my walls as a kid! Just looked at some pics and he’s a little slim but looks ok to me?

It is sad, OP, although PP was right about how he came to be with his now ex- girlfriend. Hopefully he will turn himself around and get back to acting again.
