If you have a dog that lives in your house, how do you stop your house smelling of dog? Is that even possible?

I’ve only had working dogs before, who don’t come into the house (farm dogs) but the kids want a house dog, and one of the things I’ve been considering is how to not have a ‘doggy’ house (we no longer live on a farm).

How often do you wash and brush the dog, wash dog beds, hoover, and what else can be done? Do you wash/brush dry off when you come back from a walk?

We rarely used to do any of those things - a wash was only when they rolled in fox poo!

I have a show cocker (as opposed to a working cocker). He’s groomed at the groomer every 6 weeks. We have a washing up bowl that we use to wash his paws after walks. He’s kept shorn short with fringe in legs/ears. I wash his face once a day with a warm moist wash cloth

No smells

If he were very muddy (ie, more than his paws), he’s bathed and blown dry with the hair dryer. In wet weather, he has a rain coat (not for drizzle though). No wet dog, no dog smell.

In summer when he swims in the river, his paws are washed and he’s dried thoroughly before coming in the house.

Some people I know use baby wipes.

All dog owners houses smell of dog! Some to a greater or lesser extent but they all do!

Its easy. You go nose blind.

We've got a working cocker and a sprocker. We wash their legs/tummies off after every walk, they've got Tuffies beds so little odour, and we hoover lots. We've also got lots of washable rugs that we keep in the kitchen (microfibre type ones) and the dogs tend to lie on those. They both get a proper shower and thorough coat wash around once a month.

No one has ever said it smells doggie...... but I'm sure we're nose blind to it, tbh!

All dog owners houses smell doggy. The good news is you get used to your own dog/house's smell so don't notice it 😁

We have a working cocker spaniel and a springer spaniel

We have only hard flooring downstairs and dogs are not allowed upstairs.

We have a large mat in the lounge which I clean once a month with a vax.

The cover on their bed gets changed weekly.

When muddy they get hosed, then they wear their drying coats (Ruff and Tumble - fabulous) and stay in the study (where their bed is) until dry.

Leather sofas with fleece throws which get changed weekly.

Warm soapy shower once a month.

On the whole I don’t think my house smells bad, but there is bound to be some smell when keeping dogs in the house.

I know several people who claim their houses don’t smell of dog, and they are obsessive about cleaning.

They all smell of dog.

I also know dog owners who think their houses don’t smell.

They do. Always. Some worse than others.

If you have a dog, your house will smell of dog.

Oh I’ve managed it.

I got an incontinent cat which pisses and shits on the carpet and the house stinks of cat piss instead! 😆

I think it depends on the dog. One of my dogs (lab x poodle) used to have a smell, the other one didn't. Not his mouth, not his fur, no smell. (Shitloads of hair though.)

Most dogs aren’t ‘designed’ to be be washed, it is t actually good for them as it can strip away their natural oils and protection. I suspect all homes where there are dogs smell to some extent but it doesn’t have to be overpowering. We have lots of towels we use for paw wiping etc. Wash them and the rugs frequently. Open the windows and doors as often as we can.

I don’t have a dog.

I can always smell dog in a dog owners house.

I have 2 boxers and love the smell of them!

Nose blind, plug ins

Mylittlepony374 Tue 16-Feb-21 19:26:29

Used to have dogs in house and clean obsessively and think the house didn't smell. Until my sister came to say and said it stunk. I think if you have dogs inside it's impossible not to have some level of dog smell.

TheVolturi Tue 16-Feb-21 19:30:56

Yep, dogs just smell! You won't notice it after a while, but it will still smell to others.

TerribleCustomerCervix Tue 16-Feb-21 19:31:49

People always say their house doesn’t smell like dog, but they inevitably do. Doesn’t matter how much you clean, how often the dog gets groomed, there’s still a distinct smell.

Some worse than others- I have a friend whose clothes smell like dog, never mind her house!

I think it’s one of those things you just need to accept about having a dog, like having to factor in kennel fees when you go on holiday, or pet insurance/grooming/ vet bills having to be worked into the family budget.

I have 5 male humans living in my house. They pretty much over shadow the smell of the dog.

Yuddiesorno Tue 16-Feb-21 19:35:01

Yep it always smells of dog 😀 but ours have always been worth it. The joy my dogs bring is worth a bit of a pong to me 😁🐕❤

Catwoman123 Tue 16-Feb-21 19:38:00

I love dogs (as well as cats obvs) but I've never been in a house with a dog that didn't smell of dog. Some less than others but sorry they all definitely smell of dog.
I'll completely admit my house at the moment smells of 7 cats as we 7 cats right now.confused

balzamico Tue 16-Feb-21 19:39:13

I have a Lurcher - my very good friends who do not have a dog say that our house doesn't smell and I believe them. We have wooden floors downstairs and he only smells vaguely doggy when he's damp but he dries really quickly

BillieSpain Tue 16-Feb-21 19:40:54

Yep, we recently got a dog. All summer was fine as she wanted to sleep outside. But this winter she sleeps inside and you can certainly smell it!

I can always smell when someone has a dog.

I love the smell of my dog. I don't wash her unless she has been in the muddy river.

I sweep alot! But you can't get rid of the smell grin

The only smelly thing about my dogs, are their stinky farts.
