Help, I'm being switched over to managed payments on Ebay

tectonicplates · 14/02/2021 17:41

I'm just a small personal seller and I sell 2-4 items per month.

I've been asked to update my details for this new "managed payments" system that loads and loads of people have been complaining about. It'll mean I'll be paid directly into my bank account rather than Paypal, but it sounds like a massive faff and I've heard all sorts of complaints about it.

Any advice, please? How much of a nightmare is it going to be?

I've already switched and it seems fine. Money just goes straight into my account.

I had to do it too but it's fine so far.

Is it a choice or are they forcing it?

@Whatsnewpussyhat

Is it a choice or are they forcing it?

As far as I can tell, if you don't sign up for it then you could lose the ability to sell anything.

Interesting that two people above have said it's fine, as the Ebay messageboards seem to be full of people complaining about it and saying they've encountered all sorts of problems.

I switched a few weeks ago and it's been fine so far

Okay then. Sounds like maybe a few people had a problem with it, but it's been fine for most people.

It’s par for the course that the eBay boards will be full of complaints - it’s people venting about their issue. The people who’ve had an issue will be really vocal, people who it goes fine for probably won’t spend much time talking about it unless they see someone asking!

It seems fine for most people, and it makes sense given the eBay/PayPal split up. It’s quite convenient getting paid direct to your bank account and I’ve had no issues yet, it’s fast and works well.

I'm a business seller on ebay and was changed over to direct payments a while ago. Its fine, no problems with it.

So if you are paid directly into your bank account can you swerve the PayPal fees? Sounds like a winner if that's the case.

But the Ebay fees are higher as a result, so it works out at about the same amount you receive in the end.

I was wary of this but it's been fine. The same process as Etsy if anyone uses that also.

Ah, ok. @tectonicplates thanks

What's the issue with money going directly into bank accounts instead of via a Paypal account?

The amount Paypal charges private sellers is extortionate given the rules on the cost of electronic payment services, but that's part of the price of doing business on eBay. I assume that they're increasing ebay fees to compensate if they're being told to reduce what they charge for Paypal.

Ebay have made it clear they're no longer interested in their original core market of people selling their second hand bits and pieces and a lot of these types of sellers will move to Facebook market place anyway, leaving eBay to be full of large scale professional sellers.

I'm a business seller and prefer the new arrangement. I get a message in the morning telling me how much has been paid into my account. There have been no problems at all.

The only problem I have had so far is eBay withholding all funds for an item due to a buyer raising a case.
Package was out for delivery, the courier was unable to deliver within the estimated time and buyer raised a non delivery case within 4 hours of the time slot being missed and demanded I tell her exactly where it was Confused It was all tracked and courier stated there may be delays due to the weather that day.
It is very much a buyers a market.

It's more that I've heard so many people complaining about it, and saying "Oh no! Not the dreaded managed payments!" etc. But all the replies here would say otherwise, so I'm going to assume it'll all be fine.

I've been switched on one of my selling accounts, its no different really but because I used to sell a lot of low value (sub £5) items I used a PayPal micropayments account which is 5p+5%. EBay now charge 12.8% + 30p (and if a transaction is cancelled, refunded, didn't arrive etc you lose the 30p) so a lot of my cheaper lines I'm stopping selling because the profit just isn't there.

To give an example one thing I could buy in from a wholesaler at 9p and sell for £2 including postage - on micropayments I end up with 64p profit. On managed payments I get 43p. Just an example.

Does this mean buyers will not be allowed to use PayPal to pay either?

I've just been moved over to this last week, first time I've been selling bits on eBay in a while. (Personal seller, old bits lying around - not a business)
First thing sold on but it now on Thursday, for £14.00 (I offered free postage)
I've revived £11.91 from the £14.00 into my eBay account today.
I find it not completely clear how it works compared to PayPal which I am so used to but seems ok so far.

BerniesMittens · 15/02/2021 11:37

@Purpletomato no, buyers can still use PayPal to buy.

How long does it take for the funds to go into the bank account? So after the item sells? Same day? Same week?

Anyone finding this system massively frustrating?
