What weird things do you say in your house?

Ginevere · 14/02/2021 10:09

Whenever me or my DH says ‘are you ready?’ the other will reply ‘I’m ready, promotion’ which is a line from the Spongebob movie.

We’ve been doing it so long that it never occurred to me that it was weird until my mum overheard it on the phone and asked if someone was getting a promotion.

Now I’m wondering if anyone else has any strange things they only say in their house?

Whe we clink glasses one says "Cheers Big Ears"
The other says "Fuck off Noddy"

We're nice to each other mostly!

"See you later, moon crater" when leaving the house or going up to bed.

'Is it a pony?' on receiving any gift and '2 faces' on being asked what chicken we'd like. Both from the 80s movie 'Big Man on Campus'.

We say be careful out there I can't remember why or what it's from

When we leave the house we say "byeee Buddy hope you find your dad" from Elf 😂

These are so cute...

Recently, we've been using catchphrases from the youtube Pitch Meetings videos- "I don't know", "Barely an inconvenience" and "... (random thing) is TIGHT!"

If the cat does something weird, we say 'Thanks, Ginge...' then add 'THINGE' at the end, which I think comes from the Look Around You comedy series.

So many!
Anything blue, gets pointed out by singing the David Bowie song with the lyrics “blue, blue, electric blue, that’s the colour of my car/ dress/ icecream”
“I don’t mind if I do, Jerry” when offered anything (from Cabin Pressure). Often followed by a splutter and a “turns out I do mind, quite a lot!”
“I’ve got the key, I’ve got the secret” whenever anyone has a key
God, we really are insufferable. We do try not to do it in front of anyone else.

We use the same one from Spongebob OP. Also 'throw me a frikkin bone here' said in frustration when failing miserably at some task or chore - from Austin Powers.

Actually there's loads we're a family of movie geeks, comic fans and bookworms so there's always random references thrown into daily conversation that most people would be HmmHmmHmm at Grin

We say "smell you later" at the end of a conversation/when leaving the housing which I think is from Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

When someone says "oh Jesus", we will always add "but who is this Jebus" which is a line from the Simpsons.

We are very childish.

When someone sneezes we say 'hail the tuna'

Ah I love that your families are all as bonkers as we are. We use film & TV quotes constantly.

We often say 'Hey Earl.'
'Hey Crabman' as a greeting from My Name Is Earl.

'Hello Dave' from League of Gents is popular in our house too.

If one of us is telling a boring or rambling anecdote, we say 'Skip to the end' from Spaced.

And I realise that you can probably tell instantly how old we are from our quotes of choice Grin

Lol we do "I've got the key" too @SnowyBranches My kids had never heard the song when they started doing it Blush and it's not even a song that I liked particularly at the time.

Loads of movie quotes and Alan Partridge quotes again including during a time when my kids were too young to watch the original in question.

Eg anything involving buying DIY supplies usually ends up with someone saying "never gonna use them, never gonna use them", or if someone's wittering on about some shit it's "I'm sorry Michael, but that was just a noise".

Also if one of us drops something, it's "Is this a bit of your brain?" which is Fawlty Towers and really old.

Whenever we have a family meal, someone always has to ask "Oh Doris, where's the salad" from Gavin and Stacey.

And DD's boyfriend is called Jamie so we always say "Goodnight JimBob" from the Waltons when they go upstairs at night - it goes over their heads completely and they just think we're weird.

When we are annoyed by the other we sort of sing a song about it such as ‘Oooooh SoboredDP, you’re really very annoying, SoboredDP’
Always the same tune, but varying subjects. It’s so lame, but gets the frustration out in a way we can laugh about it!

Oh god, so many silly things! My boyfriend and I sing the mahna mahna song from The Muppets, to each other all the time. Also the word Yarp (Hot Fuzz) is frequently mentioned - apropos of nothing, lol. Also various other film references, including ‘it’s all in the reflexes’ (Big trouble in little China), when something is a success… I am reading this back concluding lockdown is indeed getting to us…

By far the most silly thing we do is have this conversation at least once a day.

Me: Are you alright?
Dp: Yeah I'm alright, are you alright?
Me: I'm alright, are you alright?
Dp: I'm alright, are you alright?
Me: Yeah I'm alright, are you alright?
Dp: I'm alright.
Me: Alright.
Dp: Alright.

Stupid. We can't stop though.
