New dinner set - what would you buy?

We bought our last set of plates and bowls in a Debenhams sale and a couple are broken and thrown out / chipped now. Can't find replacements anywhere.

Dp fancies some patterned stuff we spotted in Tesco but I'm guessing we couldn't replace if we break any as theyrealways updating

Don't need cups - we have LOADS

We do need side plates, dinner plates, cereal bowls and pasta bowls

Denby is lovely but eye wateringly expensive

Any ideas?!

I use ikea on a daily basis but why not have plates that mix and match such as some patterned and some plain so not a problem if the odd one breaks?

I love the Tesco ones too but wonder the same thing about replacing broken ones.

I've seen some lovely patterned sets but I worry about replacing broken ones, so I've not replaced ours and I really need to! I hope some one can link to a nice set!

You can get Denby with clubcard points. I keep thinking I should do that as it's 3x value.

Depends on how much you want to spend really. My business deals with tableware, so although Denby can be expensive (depending on how much you buy) IF you look after it, it will last for years. If you only want dinner plates, side/salad plates, bowls & mugs, grab a couple of M&S boxed sets, the quality is ok, but they do tend to discontinue the designs fairly regularly & can be difficult to replace once out of production. Villeroy & Boch is lovely quality, but not cheap, but generally the 'plainer' patterns intermix quite well, so you could keep a set going for a while

We've just bought Denby, and I'm heartbroken with it. The dinner plates are small and too thick to sit in the dishwasher, and for whatever reason, our dishwasher just isn't washing it properly so I end up having to do it by hand.

If I'd have known, I wouldn't have bothered. I gave our eldest DD all of our Gorden Ramsey Maze set that we had in 3 different colours, and I miss it

I'd buy the gorgeous green Habitat set that I keep eyeing up in Sainsburys. I don't need it, but I love it. It comes as a boxed set plus you can buy each item individually, so can add to the 4x bowls and plates etc that come in a boxed set.

We've got a John Lewis set and have added extra plates and bowls. Seems more robust than Ikea etc.

I love the George Home range at Asda. DH & I are currently in the market to replace our dinner plates & bowls are stuck about which set to buy from there.

I've recently bought a set from tesco, had been looking at Denby but just can't justify the cost given that it'll probably get damaged/broken within a couple of years. The one I got reminds me of the Denby style, and I bought one extra of everything to cover breakages to some degree.

I dithered for ages about this and succumbed to Denby in the end as we got some money towards it for Xmas from in laws. I'm seeing it as an investment because it makes me happy. But I'd been very happy with my John Lewis 'starter' set for 15 years up to then.

I got a second hand Denby set, for 9 people. Bowls, side plates, dinner plates, tiny plates, coffee jug, tea pot, milk jug and more for £30. It’s not in production anymore but because it’s a brand name it’s quite easy to get replacements online from what I can see

We've been using Denby for 20 years and only had a couple of breakages, it really is very robust. No problem with ours fitting in our dishwasher though, that would be annoying. Our range is discontinued now but we've had no problem picking up spares on china dealing websites.

I’m pretty boring with my choices. We have plain white plates. It’s a set from wilko atm. Previously I had plain white set from somewhere else which was kind of square shape now we have round ones !

I have thin white stuff from IKEA Tis amazing food stays piping hot, fairly light and oh so cheap.

Had Denby, didn't fit in the dishwasher very well, food went cold too quickly, weighed a tonne.

You can get a classic Royal Doulton set on ebay or Gumtree secondhand. With the classic designs, you can always replace pieces that break, from sellers on ebay that offer individual items from a set for a few pounds.

Another vote for Denby very hard wearing lasted us a good 25 years. In the unlikely event there's a breakage they can easily be replaced. Also there tends to be a sale on for them somewhere all the time

We've had the plain white Maxim range from M&S since we got married 20 years ago. Easy to replace broken plates/dishes as it's still going.
