Those people who said "fuck it, we're having the best Christmas ever" ...how was it?

A lot of people before Christmas said because 2020 wasn't much fun and a bit of a shit show they were going to do things like get their kids everything they asked for/big presents for people etc.

Did you do that? How was it? Did it make Christmas better?

Not a dig. I promise. Just genuinely hoping that it was as good as you hoped.

I can't imagine any living soul on the planet had the best Christmas ever this year.

I enjoyed it, I'm normally under pressure to cook for anything up to 20 people - definitely into the teens most years - and this year it was just us.
I'll never be forced into cooking for people I can barely stand ever again!

I have to say, we didn’t have the Christmas we planned, we met with bil and his dw for a gloriously sunny walk and came home just us (no visitors) and ended up having the most relaxed Christmas ever. We usually have 20 round and I barely see my dc as we are rushed off our feet. It’s fun but chaotic.
So we didn’t say fuck it and have anyone round, we are in one of the highest transmission areas in the country at present, but we did have (IMO) the best Christmas ever.
I wouldn’t say it to the rest of my family as I know the next Christmas should be back to ‘normal’ish and we may have a houseful once again. It was the least stressful Christmas I’ve ever had and i would like to do it every year!
A friend of mine has a mum that’s terminally ill and they had a ‘fuck it’ Christmas as her mum isn’t likely to make Easter. I don’t begrudge them that. They all self isolated for 2 weeks before going round and and afterwards but friend says they have absolutely no regrets.

I had covid and spent the day either sleeping on the sofa or puking in the toilet. We planned a takeaway but all 3 orders we placed got cancelled so it was beige freezer food for dinner.
Non of the dc complained though and happily entertained themselves with all their lovely presents. Hopefully Xmas 2021 will be much better

We had the best Xmas ever but like others - it was because it was stress free. We didn't overspend or do anything extravagant so no 'fuck it' but it was fabulous!

Lovely. All looked great - we were going to have a nice, peaceful Christmas playing games, eating nice food and hunkering down.

And then I developed COVID symptoms and felt horrible for the entire festive season. Sad

@Chicchicchicchiclana

I can't imagine any living soul on the planet had the best Christmas ever this year.

I’m going to have to disabuse you of that.

Normally go to parents, as the unfavoured child it’s normally spent listening to a long list of my various faults, compared to my sisters dazzling achievements.

This year, at the last minute, parents decided they didn’t want to risk it, and would only be having my sister and her family round.

So we stayed home. Our DD, and brand new grandson came, along with her partner and six year old stepson (H). The lounge was filled with presents and the look on H’s face when he saw the huge sack for him was brilliant. It’s been a long time since we had kids around for Xmas.

The whole day was spent with people that actually like, no, love me, and no one criticised or ridiculed anything I said or did.

After DD and family went home DH and I sat and drank wine and set the world to rights, the cleaning up waited till the next day. Normally mother would be playing the martyr, cleaning up while simultaneously refusing offers of help.

I was actually upset when DM told me we were uninvited, but to be honest, I want to do the same again next year, it was fab. DD said the same. Just have to work out how to tell mother now. No doubt I’ll be the bad guy splitting the family in two.

Ours was nice but then it usually is. Couldn't afford to splash out but we did treat ourselves to a real Christmas tree this year, but I don't think I'll do it again next year. Only because disposing it is such a faff.

I had a fantastic Xmas.
After what I've been through this year I really appreciated being healthy and spending time with my immediate family.
And enjoyed lots of time outside.
And ate huge quantities of stollen.

Yes but Aposterhasnoname - surely you'd rather suffer yet another interminable Christmas at your parent's instead of this global crisis that's going on?

I'm the black sheep in my family of 5 siblings and don't usually love Christmas, so while spending Christmas at home cosied up in my little group wasn't exactly gruelling, the background buzz of everything else going on in the world meant we could not have a purely joyous time. We were grateful and content, but definitely not having "the best Christmas ever" that would be just nuts.

it was much the same as usual. my mum couldnt come out the care home but that meant less looking after needed to be done. drove to relatives had two other adults looking after the children. (one being their dad before anyone is in shock at parents leaving others to look after children) relative cooked. bloody brilliant. Sad that it had to fit in the one day though. bit of a pressure to get there and get back.

The thing is, I used to think Christmas at my parents was great. In fact, if you advance search me, you’ll find me insisting that I was going to my parents whatever. But I didn’t. And I’ve discovered that it wasn’t so great after all.

It’s been a revelation.

I was really unwell with covid late last year. I hope you’re starting to recover. Your children sound lovely and considerate 💐

We planned a big fancy Christmas hosting my family at a big fancy barn in the country we booked, it got called off at the eleventh hour and it was just us in a flat in London. DH got a tree, I ordered a case of champagne, decided to have roast beef as turkey doesn't rock my world. Spent a few days eating, getting drunk on champagne and playing loud music as all our neighbours had fecked off. Had a lot of sex- and I found out I’m pregnant yesterday. It’s been a bit a bumpy road after a miscarriage in August so hopefully it sticks.

So in that respect, it was pretty damn good, because I don’t think it would have happened if we’d have done a family Christmas 😂

The kids got spoiled, we had nice food and no pressure to be anywhere . Dm couldn’t visit so did have to entertain her, which I liked/hated . The having to stay home was nice, I’d do it again (Covid free)

Unusually for us, we were in the U.K. for the entire festive period. Unusually for use, I cooked Christmas dinner - it was great.

It was just the 3 of us (DS is 10). No massive presents this year - DS didn’t ask for anything massive.

Met up with a few lovely friends for crisp, fresh walk before Christmas and Boxing Day (tier 2) - lovely!

And on 27th December, DH developed Covid symptoms and it all went downhill from there (although DS and I didn’t catch it).

If it wasn’t for DH getting Covid, I think it would have been quiet, relaxed, lovely.

I invited friends over for xmas dinner who were also at a loose end (not in the UK) with the specific that it wasn't to be a xmas dinner, but just dinner.
For the fortnight leading up to it, I couldn't muster any enthusiasm as our adult children live and work o/s and are unable to come home and I really wanted to cancel out.

Anyhow the short and curlie of it I did go to a bit of an extra effort for the meal, the dessert I had planned was a major fail but worked as a back up to Plan B.

It turned into a lovely night and I felt a lot better the following day. I'm so pleased I didn't cancel on them.

We did everything by the rules and were lucky to have a lovely Christmas, but I definitely overspent to compensate for the restrictions and I don't think it was necessary, just me otherthinking.

Thanks for asking original poster. I previously fit into this “box” but conversely and opposite to initially envisioned - I not only did not max out Christmas but a did a full Boris style u turn and “cancelled” Christmas instead! Obviously not by choice but because no choice given how much worst the pandemic has impacted central London. I hope my personal sacrifice will save Christmas 2021!
