Please recommend cars to me!

Due DC2 in the spring. Looking for a family car that fits the following criteria:

• can be bought second hand with reasonable mileage (up to maybe 50k?) perhaps 3-5 years old for no more than £10k
  
• eco friendly, gets good mpg. Not Diesel.
  
• decent size. Need boot storage for double buggy plus various paraphernalia. DC1 has some additional needs and may need buggy or walking assistance up until 5+
  
• me and DH are tall with long legs. Need something where the interior space is also large, so we can have two 360 car seats in the back without losing all our leg room. Family cars now seem to be very tall in head height but lacking in length eg Nissan Quashqai (can’t spell it).
  
• good safety rating.
  
• would quite like some mod cons like sat nav but not essential. Don’t care about parking sensors etc.

SUV's have awful boot space as the cabin area is so big. Look at estates, some great Kia's with very long warranty, free road tax and mega mpg plus huge boots

Agree that SUVs in general have crap boot space, but we bought the CRV because it has a huge boot and a spacious interior. For us it ticked all the boxes (and was the only affordable SUV that did.) Should definitely be available in the OPs budget for that mileage.

Just bought a second Honda CRV for our family. I love it, plenty of space, reliable and safe.

CRV is likely to be awful on fuel economy though. And I don't rate hybrids for this. I drove some petrol hybrid smallish 4x4 type thing (Hyundai?) as a hire car and it used an enormous amount of fuel.

I'd look at a Skoda Octavia either hatchback or Estate.

Then seat space - for legs not sure how long you consider 36” fits in UP but obviously doesn’t have boot space

I have a 2nd hand Ford C max which would meet all your criteria except mine is the diesel version. DH is tall and there seems to be enough room in front & back (although we didn't need to fit large car seats). Not sure what the petrol models are like to drive.
Several people I know, who are tall and have families, have a Skoda, either the Octavia or the Superb and they are very happy with their cars (we looked at those also but I'm not very tall and I found they felt too big for me when trying to manoeuvre them in small spaces)

Civic tourer would be my choice. Got the non tourer mk9 and it’s great. No turbo, so less to go wrong, arguably more reliable than anything VW. I get 41mpg which I think is pretty good for 1.8 petrol, and that’s driving it quite hard. The tourer must be huuuge.

I'd pick parking sensors over sat nav any day. In car sat navs are usually not very user friendly, date quickly and are expensive or impossible to update. You can just use your phone instead.

Whereas parking sensors are very useful, especially with a bigger car and warn you of pedestrians and other traffic as well as help with parking in tight spaces.

I used to have an Vauxhall Insignia tourer. The boot was massive. I’m 5’10” and it was pretty roomy for me. It was actually a really reliable car for a Vauxhall. Maybe look at tourers as well as SUV’s. As pp said, some SUV’s have rubbish boot space and you really need to do your research on them. I thought the Qashqui didn’t have that a great boot. I did try my double buggy in the back.
Dh has a Toyota RAV4, that’s got a huge boot.
Nissan X-Trail has a huge boot, I owned one and could fit a double buggy and my shopping in that. Very sluggish to drive though, no zip in it.

Do not get a Qashqai. They are very cramped inside, boot space is next to useless, poor visibility, and horrible to drive.

Yy to a skoda. If you can find a Roomster they really are perfect, space of a much larger car fuel economy of a much smaller.

I'd actually go for a yeti over an Octavia

We love our VW Touran, very roomy even for my long legged husband with a rear facing child seat behind him and so much boot space!

Skoda Octavia Estate is massive. The Hyundai i40 Tourer is also great but I think the petrol version is more expensive than the diesel.

Yetis and Roomsters have decent boots but they remind me of a hearse...

Thanks for all the suggestions! Definitely going to look into Skodas. Might also have a look at some of the SUVs but most seemed not to be roomy enough.
